I can, Simon. A batsman is actually permitted to defend his stumps with his bat even if he has already made contact without fear of being given out for hitting it twice. Whacking the ball to the boundary with your second swipe is a different matter...

Can somebody explain why Dawid Malan wasn't given out for hitting the ball twice yesterday when he appeared to stop the ball rolling onto his wicket with his bat?

That inspection will be getting under way soon. Someone has gone to wake the umpires up. They'll be trotting down the pavilion steps any minute.

It is the 50th anniversary of the Professional Cricketers' Association this year and the BBC's Joe Wilson has been to meet Fred Rumsey, the man who helped transform the modern game with cricket's first trade union.

"I just felt it was grossly unfair that the players were in a period of development which they were having nothing at all to say about," Fred recalls. "They weren't even allowed to comment on whether they should start at 2 in the afternoon on a Sunday. Even the church had more say than the players!"

The cheeseboard you saw was probably mine. Last summer at the Lord's Test I remembered my board, but forgot the cheese (as documented on TMS). I considered taking lobster to The Oval this summer, but it was too much of a logistical challenge.

It's potentially looking a little brighter, mind. The umpires are out and their umbrellas are down. The groundstaff have begun some exploratory mopping up.

If you're just joining us, it's raining at Lord's. We've only had about 25 minutes of play. In that time, England lost the wicket of Dawid Malan.
