  1. WI 43-0published at 5 overs

Glorious back-foot drive from Evin Lewis, who so far has been happy to play second fiddle. It's rising from a length from Woakes and the West Indies opener rocks back and times it through to the deep backward point boundary for four.

By the way, Chris Gayle is trending on Twitter. As is international talk like a pirate day.

In a curious way, Gayle is quite mechanical. If it's in his slot, he tries to hit it for six. If it isn't, he blocks it.

  3. WI 38-0published at 4 overs

    Gayle 32, Lewis 5

A huge shout for LBW as Willey traps Lewis in front. Too high. In fact, replays show it is going a good foot or so over.

Chris Gayle is making Joe Root and England pay for that drop.

It's a full delivery and the West Indies opener gets right under it and lofts it over mid-on for six.

Not content with just the one maximum, he does it again and this time it's even bigger. Stand and deliver kind of stuff, right past the bowler's head.

Had to stop a match when an unhappy spectator by whose car had been hit by the ball came on the pitch and confiscated our stumps before driving off with them. I had to pick them up from a bemused Renault dealership a few days later. Fortunately we had a spare set so play commenced timely.

  5. WI 24-0published at 3 overs

    Gayle 20, Lewis 4

Heart in the mouth moment for Evin Lewis, who has been billed as 'the young Chris Gayle' - he slices to backward point and it whistles past the hands of a diving Eoin Morgan.

Chris Gayle has got his eye in!

How many times have we seen this? He moves his front leg to make some space and hoicks it for four.

Even better! A length ball from Woakes and it's a big swing from the big man, over long-on for six.

Wide and short again from the England bowler - you know what happens. It's smashed over to the mid-on boundary for four. Big over.

Tom Donnelly: That's the 'Root' of England's problems... dropped catches!

Paul Roberts: Another England game, another dropped catch. Can't recall so many missed opportunities in previous eras?

  7. WI 7-0published at 2 overs

    Gayle 6, Lewis 1

David Willey with the other new ball in hand.

Chris Gayle plays a delicate touch to point for two. Willey over-pitches slightly and the big man flicks it over square leg for one more.

Another full delivery and it's driven up in the air, perhaps not too convincingly, down past mid-off for two more. Six from the over.

It was full in length and he went for the non-foot-moving drive. There was a lot of bat on it. Is Root to close there? It would have carried another 10 feet. You'd stand there in a Test, but Gayle is going to go at the ball hard.

  9. WI 1-0published at 1 over

It is a fine first over from Chris Woakes who is unlucky not to have an early wicket to his name.

He got the ball to shape away as Gayle played inside the line a couple of times. But how costly will that drop be?

Root had it an one stage. It hit the palm of his hand very hard. What a let-off.

    WI 0-0

Should have been taken! Chris Gayle edges Chris Woakes to second slip and it's an absolute dolly for Joe Root who makes a complete mess of it. Early let off for the Windies!

Blue(ish) skies, as umpires Simon Fry and Tim Robinson (today's pantomime villains) make their way to the middle. Followed by Eoin Morgan and his men. Then finally Evin Lewis and Chris Gayle appear. Here we go ....

It is a fact that Stokes and Samuels don't get on well. David Willey is feisty. These two sides have history.

Paul Hallett: This is crazy, given what us league and village players play on year in, year out. I've never seen Manchester so sunny.

Rick Harris: This delay shows just how divorced 'professional' umpires are from the grass roots game, and the paying public - shameful.

Eventful morning, the crowd have been made to wait but finally we will see some cricket . Call me a cynic, but something tells me that this isn't the last we have heard about the outfield.

Play to get under way in just over 10 minutes.

England captain Eoin Morgan: "I would have batted, it looks a really good wicket. It certainly looks predictable. The groundstaff have done an outstanding job. To produce a wicket like that is credit to them.

"We're always tinkering with our team, we have a long way to go and we are always looking to strive and bridge that gap."

West Indies captain Jason Holder: "It seems a pretty good wicket, it tends to be spin later and we are taking that into consideration.

"There aren't not many overs lost, we just need to execute our plan. Hopefully our top order can fire, we have a good mix of youth and experienced players. We're looking to start this series well."
