Genuinely, can someone please explain the difference between cricket and (for example) football or rugby that makes running around on a wet outfield so much more dangerous? It makes absolutely no sense - cricket needs to wake up and accept we're in the 21st century.

I tell you what, I wouldn't fancy being one of the umpires right now. I mean, if you really think it isn't fit, and know they shouldn't play, you can't help but be swayed by the thousands of paying punters.

Trevor Bayliss has drifted away, as though he's been told what's what and isn't happy with it. But this is purely an umpire's call on safety.

The umpires are with both skippers now. I'll be honest, this doesn't look great. Some boos and whistles from the crowd...

The sun's been shining for a while. I've seen many games start in these conditions. There's something that the umpires are saying to Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss... West Indies, I'm sure, would like a 20-over game.

Good lord, I can't imagine the scale of the row if this one gets canned.

It looks to me like the umpires are doing their best impression to make it look like it [the outfield] is not fit.

The umpires are having a chat with Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss. But of pointing, some digging of the feet into the outfield. It looks very wet underfoot.

Right then, the umpires should be shuffling out for that inspection any minute now. Rumours that they are doing it in wellies are yet to be confirmed.

We played in a game at the Valley of Rocks (Lynton) last year that was paused due to a very loud and colourful 'Mini' rally. In the end we had to carry on through it, not ideal batting with a stream of colourful Mini's driving past the bowlers arm.

To put the struggle at Old Trafford into context, some 50 miles away at Chesterfield, there will be no play on day one of Derbyshire's match against Kent because of a wet outfield.

There is a danger that our players could go out to the IPL and not play. There is that risk. But Adil Rashid was one of the leading wicket-takers in the Big Bash.

Hales is a good player - by going to number five at Notts, he made up his mind that's where he's suited in the longer format. But if he's not picked for the Ashes, I think he should focus on white-ball cricket. I think of someone like Nick Knight who was our stand-out one-day player in the 1990s, he would have a fantastic career now.

Alex Hales for me has shown he's mentally capable at international level. He didn't make it as a Test opener, but could be really destructive at number five. We've struggled so long, I say get him on the plane.
