I look at three players in this side - Jos Buttler, Adil Rashid and Alex Hales. I don't know if they'll go to Australia, depending on how they do in this series. If they do unbelievably well, they could get on the Ashes tour. But would Buttler want to go and play in Bangladesh and the Big Bash, or sit on the bench for the Ashes?

How do you shoo a camel? I imagine it takes a little more persuading that a dog, cat or pig.

Played a tour game in Dubai, two young camels ran on the pitch followed by a distressed mother camel. 15 mins of standing at square leg and they were shoo'ed off!

We're talking about when cricket stopped but, at Old Trafford, it hasn't even started. Wet outfield. Ruddy Manchester.

The sun is out and we're nearing that 13:00 inspection. I've heard a rumour that a 13:30 start would mean is stays 50 overs each.

I once saw a cricket match called off as a local farmers hedge had fallen down. The match was called off due to sheep on the outfield.

Gayle just needs to stay in good shape and have good hand-eye co-ordination, which he does have. With the likes of Evin Lewis and Shai Hope, this West Indies side could be on the up over the next few years, and Stuart Law is great for them.

The question for England for much of this series is going to be "how do you bowl to Chris Gayle?" Or "how do you make him run", as running's not his forte.

A 3rd XI game at Ashington (childhood club of S.Harmison and M.Wood) was once called off because, in preparing the pitch, the heavy roller conked out and could not be moved for love nor money (or cricket)

It's dried quite a lot since I've been out here. It's very easy to say from the commentary box, but why don't they get out there and play?

I played in the game with the helicopters, Gareth Gates landed and embarrassingly we had to pause the game so we could go and shake his hand and get some autographs!

I'm told that, at the moment, there's no chance of the game being abandoned completely, but that we're looking at a significant number of lost overs. Watch this space.

West Indies coach Stuart Law (an ex-Lancashire player) on TMS: "You don't often see sunshine and blue sky in Manchester and we're not starting on time. It's not the first time this has happened at this venue. But hopefully the sun will dry it out. It was very cold in Durham, so credit to our guys for staying out there and seeing it through.

"Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels are two world-class players and it's good they're here to see the younger players through. You can see that Evin Lewis has grown in stature from opening with Chris in the CPL."

Charles Tilley: If overs are lost today it's mental. it's a day/night game. Should be able to play until full conclusion no matter what!

Ed: "It's a bit soft in some areas"... professional sportsmen wearing spikes unable to run on grass... crazy.

FredM: How is the sodden outfield going to be any drier at 1pm than 12.30?! It's 11 degrees in Manchester...

Simon King from BBC Weather: "We have had a bit of a misty, murky foggy start. That hasn't helped the outfied but we have some sunshine coming through now which will continue throughout the afternoon. We have light winds, if we want the outfield to dry quicker then we need that wind to be a bit stronger.

"As for the second ODI at Trent Bridge on Thursday, it will be dry start but rain will come in from the middle to late afternoon, so I expect there will be an early finish."

I'm trying to think of the daftest reason I've ever seen for cricket not being played (I'm not saying that this is particularly daft, but you know what I mean).

There's one club in my local league that is next to Stoke City's ground, where once they were holding some sort of pop concert.

Cricket kept getting interrupted by helicopters landing to ferry singers in and out of the Potteries.

Surely those poor little cherubs should be able to play if the outfield is damp? Unless it's life-threatening damp. There are paying spectators in the ground. Pathetic.
