  1. Eng 246-6published at 40 overs

Moeen is looking for anything that Powell drops short, swiveling once more to pull in front of square for four. This is potentially Powell's last over, and Moeen looks like he knows it, slapping to long-on. If that is the end of Powell, his 1-38 is very respectable.

That was a brave dive. Evin Lewis was never going to catch it, but it hit him on the left shoulder. It's saved his team two runs.

  3. Eng 239-6published at 39 overs

    Moeen 22, Woakes 6

Miguel Cummins has been withdrawn after that very tidy spell. Jerome Taylor is recalled, the Windies possible smelling blood. It almost works too, with a Moeen pull shot almost being held by a diving Evin Lewis at deep square leg. It was a cracking effort, with Lewis taking the bouncing ball on the bonce for his trouble.

Powell has done such a good job, Jason Holder will be wise to let him continue.

    Powell 70-31-1

Rovman Powell hasn't bowled with any great pace - low 70s - but he's generally been full and straight enough to keep the batsmen honest. To illustrate the point, when Powell is short and wide, Moeen is able to put his hands through the ball for an edge to the third man for four. When Powell gets back to Plan A, Moeen finds it harder to get away.

Francis Edwards: Said this for a long time, Jos Buttler is a very infuriating player, so much ability but only good one in six innings.

Jonathan Barton: I really hope these are the last wickets for a bowler called Cummins in 2017.

  7. Eng 228-6published at 37 overs

Miguel Cummins has a loping run-up. He'd almost get as much pace through the crease if he walked in from two paces. There's a wide gully in place for Moeen Ali, who pounces on a short one to pull in front of square for four. A total luxury for England's to have Mo's magnificent beard strolling out at number seven.

Peter: Be interested to see Buttler's scores for the last 12 months. I have a feeling it's not great.

    Moeen 9, Woakes 2

Still Rovman Powell, who bowls from wide of the crease with an open-chested, almost one-armed action. England are feeling their way after that mini-collapse, unsure whether to stick or twist. It's grey at Bristol, but rain does not feel imminent. The Windies have fought back well.

    Cummins 6-0-36-3

Miguel Cummins has bowled well - he's accounted for Hales, Buttler and now Root. Chris Woakes is the new man, with the England lower order now having to make sure the hosts get to 300. I can hear the knives sharpening over Root's conversion rate. Getting out after making fifties isn't too bad a problem to have, though.

He will be disappointed on not converting it to a 100, but also because he was key for England to get above 300 and a really high score. That will frustrate Joe. It was just a lack of concentration.

Root lbw Cummins 84 (Eng 217-6)

Yep, a fine knock comes to an end with one of the plumbest lbws you will ever see. Full and straight from Miguel Cummins, Joe Root played across the line and his pads were the only thing stopping the ball from hitting leg stump halfway up. The two noises were the ball hitting both pads. England just losing their way here. They've lost three wickets for 11 runs.

If Joe Root hasn't hit this, he's stone dead lbw to Cummins. There were two noises, though. Given out on the field...

    Root 84, Moeen 6

In one of the flats at the Ashley Down Road End, someone has hung a banner that says "hit here for a beer". It's only on the first tier, so Chris Gayle could be drinking for free tonight. Rovman Powell has done an excellent job with his part-time meds, despite being pulled for four by Moeen. If Powell can get through three more, the Windies might not need to bowl any more spin.

England have been slowed down by those wickets but they still have plenty in the shed. They should still get well above 300.

  18. Eng 211-5published at 33 overs

Moeen is away with a punch off the back foot for a single. When Stokes and Root were together, 350, maybe even 400 was possible. That might not be the case now, even if England's batting is deeper than the ocean.

  20. Eng 210-5published at 32.3 overs

The players are taking drinks at the fall of the wicket. Moeen Ali is the new man. There's not much more to say about the Buttler dismissal other than it was an absolute trimmer.
