    Root 55, Stokes 45

These spinners will be doing the West Indies' bowling rate the world of good, they don't hang about in getting back to their mark.

Short from Bishoo, on the off stump and Stoke rocks back and dispatches it to the boundary for four. This partnership is now worth 78 runs from 12.4 overs.

Ralph Brooker: Morgan falls victim to the 'limited-over specialist' + the huge lay-offs between very short ODI series + being captain.

Oooh, a bit of spin and bounce from Nurse nearly finds the the edge of Ben Stokes' bat, who was looking to play a late cut down to third man. That's the closest he has looked to getting out.

Just the one from the over. Tidy from Nurse.

  4. Eng 145-3published at 22 overs

    Root 54, Stokes 39

HEADS!! That was to those in the apartments overlooking the Bristol County Ground, as Stokes hits a huge lofted six over long-on, straight onto the balcony of one those flats.

Stokes has 39 from 33 balls.

England happy to take their time against the spinners, waiting for the bad balls and working away the good ones, as Ashley Nurse concedes three singles from his over.

Remember, rain predicted towards the later overs in this innings. Perhaps England will look to put their foot on the accelerator soon?

You're never that bothered about losing wickets as long as Joe Root is at the crease - he's just so good. You barely remember a game when Root doesn't get 50.

  8. 50 runs

50 for Joe Root - Eng 132-3published at 20 overs

Joe Root reaches his 24th ODI half-century with a simple dab down the wicket. We have said it before but how many other batsmen in world cricket offer such calmness and composure at the crease? Well played.

  10. Eng 128-3published at 19 overs

    Root 48, Stokes 28

More spin as Jason Holder looks to Ashley Nurse to break up this partnership. The big burly figure of Nurse tosses it up to Root, who steers it to mid-on for a single.

Horrible fielding from Marlon Samuels. Awful. A reverse-sweep from Stokes which goes straight through the hands of Samuels at backward point. He took an age to get down.

Richard Gauntlett: Right on time, the anti Morgan bandwagon creaks into town, don't trip over the 70 and the 80 scored within the last 5 inngs.

  12. Eng 122-3published at 18 overs

The spinner is offering very little threat as Bishoo races through his second over. England find the gaps and running well between the wicket, working him away for six singles.

The only pace bowler is this team who plays Test cricket is Stokes, so the crossover has ceased. Mark Wood has played both forms, but has injury problems. Steven Finn has faded as a white-ball bowler but I suspect we'll see him in the Ashes squad.

  14. Eng 116-3published at 17 overs

    Root 44, Stokes 20

Miguel Cummins continues as Stokes pulls to the square-leg boundary for a single. Root slices down to third man for another run.

Ben Stokes skips down the wicket and lofts Cummins over mid-on for four, the ball falling on the boundary foam on its descent.

A single to end the over. Runs coming easily for England.

The players have had a quick drinks break and it's time for spin as Devendra Bishoo comes in for a turn of the arm.

Root works it onto the leg side for two and then some poor fielding from Jason Holder in the covers, who is nutmegged, gifts England a couple more.

Both sides have two spinners each, it's early days but there is little sign of turn at the moment. England comfortably score from the first five balls of the over. Seven from it.

Root goes in at No.3 in one-dayers - why not Tests? Maybe it's because Morgan is captain. I think it's time he moved up to No.3 in Tests and Westley or Malan at No.4.

  18. Eng 101-3published at 15 overs

    Root 36, Stokes 13

Cummins to Stokes, who defends one, leaves the next and pulls to long leg for a single.

That brings Joe Root on strike, who looks to pull and top edges it for six! How did that carry over the rope? It shows how small the boundary is.

That brings up England's 100 in the 15th over.

Root is going at more than a run a ball by playing orthodox shots. He's playing classically and without risk.

  20. Eng 93-3published at 14 overs

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE .... Christopher Henry Gayle just dived at gully to field the ball. I say dive, he tumbled. The crowd cheered. Gayle smiled.

Solid from Joe Root, a back-foot drive, piercing the field and through the point area for four. Stokes, who has shown intent since he has come in, slashes at a wide one which falls just short of gully.
