Guptill was seduced by those gaps on the leg side and was so keen to be collecting in between the big shots. It's important you can do that but you have to play with the full blade in England. A big wicket for Australia after a slightly loose start.

    Guptill c Maxwell b Hazlewood 26 (NZ 40-1)

Oops. That's not pretty from Martin Guptill. Hazlewood squared him up, Guptill got his hands crossed over and the ball spooned off a leading edge towards Glenn Maxwell at point. Maxwell barely had to move, just a tiny step forward to snaffle the ball up.

I'm surprised New Zealand batted. Overhead conditions are cloudy which can assist seam movement.

  4. NZ 38-0published at 5 overs

    Starc 3-0-18-0

Ooft, full toss from Starc, and Guptill is fuming that he's missed out on that. He makes up for it to the next delivery, though; a glorious checked drive, Guptill just gently pushing forward, and the ball flies away for four. This isn't great from the opening bowlers, really - Starc's bowled full but not nailed the yorker, and Guptill prods down the pitch for yet another boundary.

Both Hazlewood and Starc are having difficulty to find the line they can operate from.

It's been a messy start from Australia, changes of line and changes of length. New Zealand have cashed in.

  6. NZ 29-0published at 4 overs

    Guptill 16, Ronchi 12

Shot! Oh, there's few nicer things than an on-drive, and Guptill plays one to perfection. David Warner dives and receives a cheer from the crowd for his troubles as the ball clatters into the boundary. A wild golf swing from Guptill has Hazlewood pulling faces, before Ronchi cracks another boundary over cover.

    NZ 19-0

And, indeed, Ronchi is safe, throwing his bat over the line to get home. Really wonderful fielding from Warner, though - he was moving away to his right but aiming to his left with the ball.

Really quick movement from Warner, moving from his right so had the balance going towards the stump. He certainly hit the stumps very hard. I think he will be safe here.

    NZ 18-0

Ooh is Luke Ronchi out?! A cracking throw from David Warner at point has knocked the zing bails off, and Ronchi looked like he was struggling to make his ground. We're going upstairs...

  11. NZ 14-0published at 2 overs

    Guptill 11, Ronchi 2

Josh Hazlewood will take the second new ball and that's lovely work from Martin Guptill, clipping a full delivery up and away for the first boundary of the innings. Hazlewood readjusts but that is far too wide, and it's easy for Guptill to smash the ball through point for another boundary.

The fact New Zealand have gone with Luke Ronchi shows they want to be aggressive at the top of the order.

  13. NZ 4-0published at 1 over

There is indeed a hint of swing from Starc, and Guptill clips the ball off his toes and away for a few. Decent pace from Starc, up in the late 80mph's, but the openers negotiate the first over with relative ease.

On the subject of Mitc Starc, we surveyed world cricket's captains on which players they would like in their side - and Starc was the runaway winner in the bowling stakes. You can read the full results here.

Martin Guptill and Luke Ronchi are at the crease, and it's Guptill who will take the first ball from Mitchell Starc. If there's any movement in this pitch, he's the man you'd back to find it first up.

    James Taylor
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

I'm surprised New Zealand haven't selected Jeetan Patel on his home ground, he knows these conditions so well. If anybody would know how to spin it here, it's him.

    Australia v New Zealand

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "It looks like a good surface, it always is here. Hopefully we can get runs on the board and scrap with the ball towards the end. We've had plenty of cricket in the build-up and we're looking forward to getting the competition under way."

Australia captain Steve Smith: "We were probably going to bowl first anyway, hopefully we can make the most of any swinging conditions early on. The guys are in a good head space, are playing really well and are looking forward to getting started."
