The umpires are here and Australia are hot on their heels as they make their way to the middle. In fact, Mitch Starc is in position, ready to bowl the over before the batsmen have made their way to the wicket. Eoin Morgan has a prod of the pitch as he makes his way to the crease.

The Australia fielders have been stood just beyond the boundary rope for the past five minutes. They're desperate to get back on, pacing around like a caged tiger. England, you presume, have got their feet up in the dressing room and are in no hurry to move.

I might regret saying this, but these Aussie quicks have the same issue Rashid does when it comes to Test cricket. It's all well and good when players have to attack you, but in Test cricket players can afford to defend and then punish the bad ball. For me, Rashid, Starc & Cummins will always give you a four ball per over.

I bumped into Aaron Finch earlier and he mentioned the pitch was two-paced. It's not easy to start on and it's not easy to time, especially early in the innings.

The umpires are on their way out and the covers are coming off. It looks a tad brighter up above, and the crowd are folding away the brollies and putting the kagool hoods down. There might be the odd shower later on but we should be back on soon.

Here's Joe Root's dismissal, just before the rain turned up to spoil Australia's party. No real foot movement, Hazlewood sticks to that awkward length, and Root is on his way.

  10. Why Australia must win to go throughpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

Good question, Michael. The answer is Bangladesh will finish higher than Australia if this match is washed out because Bangladesh have more wins - one to Australia's none.

The same rule means England are already assured of finishing top of Group A (with two wins) regardless of what happens today.

Can someone tell me why Australia have to win this game? If it's rained off both them and Bangladesh would have three points and exactly the same net run rate. So how would they be separated?

I did promise myself I wouldn't talk about the Ashes, because there's so many different aspects to the two series: different ball, teams, pitches, conditions etc. But I think Australia have a cracking array of pace bowlers at their disposal, if they can all stay fit. Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, spin in the form of Nathan Lyon...

Six overs in and England are three wickets down. Here's how the first two went down. First, Jason Roy, playing all around a fast, full delivery from Mitch Starc...

And then Alex Hales, unable to resist a little nibble at the superb Josh Hazlewood, and edging to first slip.

And indeed, we're off for rain. Steve Smith has a look of wry amusement on his face. Australia are taking an age to get off the field, while Morgan and Stokes - unsurprisingly - ran back in as quick as they could.

Here's Ben Stokes, and that's an enormous appeal for lbw first up! Hazlewood was running off to the slip cordon to celebrate, that's how sure he was that was out. Smith decides against the review, but dearie me. The good news for England is, the rain's starting to arrive...
