Good delivery. Hazlewood's quicker than you think, with a little bit of movement. England are in trouble. Australia are roaring back.

    Root c Wade b Hazlewood 15 (Eng 35-3)

The umpire didn't even need to lift the finger - Root was already on his way. That's so good from Hazlewood. He'd beaten Root with the second ball of the over, had an lbw shout with the third and then bowled that superb length again and Root couldn't resist. A little nick and it was an easy catch for Wade.

If they are going to do it, it has to be for the semi-final - you can't bring someone in for the final. I'd stick with Jason Roy, who is just as likely to come good in the semi-final as he is today.

    Target 278

Looking at the replay, Wade should have caught that. He was diving to his right and only got one hand to it, but the ball seemed to nestle in the meat of the gloves before falling out. Dearie me. And now Root's into the action, wafting at a Starc delivery and sending a big ol' edge through the slip cordon and down to the boundary. This is such a good tussle between bat and ball.

This was a regulation catch for an international keeper. There was a bit of glove but it didn't deflect that much. Straightaway, I thought this was as good as gone.

  6. dropped catch

Morgan dropped on 12published at 4 overs

    Eng 24-2

And now Morgan's been dropped! Flaying at a leggy delivery and the ball took a hint of glove and went through to Wade. It went wide but Wade dived and he should have clung on to that, I'd say.

  7. Eng 22-2published at 3.5 overs

Now then! Morgan shimmies down the pitch to Josh Hazlewood and carves him through the off side. And again for four! Short and wide from Hazlewood and that's a vicious cut from Morgan, as quick as you like to roll his wrists and slap the ball beyond the close fielders. Morgan allows him one dot ball before thudding the ball straight past the bowler for yet another boundary. That is brilliant work from the England captain.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

That is England's lowest score for the fall of the second wicket since Jan 2015, when they were 0-2 after three balls against Australia in Sydney.

  9. Eng 10-2published at 3 overs

    Root 6, Morgan 0

Australia need to win this match and it's given them a bit of extra zip in the field. This is the best Starc has looked with the new ball, pinning Root onto the crease and not giving him anything to hit. That's wide from Starc, though, and Root climbs into it, a lovely drive that races away to the boundary.

Mark Hefter: Now will we drop him? He's out of form so let him find form and play someone who is in form. It's not rocket science.

Neil Peter: I'm all for giving guys a fair run but at the moment with Roy it's like batting with 10 men.

John Poole: That should be Roy done now. Keeping with him is ridiculous. We might as well start 0-1 every innings.

  11. Eng 6-2published at 2 overs

Eoin Morgan is at the crease after eight balls of England's reply. So it's going well. Still, there's plenty of time left in this and these two did well against Bangladesh. Morgan crouches and follows the ball all the way into Wade's gloves at shoulder-height.

Classic dismissal. This is a significant loss - because Jason Roy is out of form, England are used to losing him. But Hales has been important.

    Hales c Finch b Hazlewood 0 (Eng 6-2)

Hales has gone for a duck! That's a clever delivery from Josh Hazlewood, that niggly sort of length that Hales couldn't resist having a push at, and Aaron Finch took a good, low catch at first slip. There was no foot movement from Hales, just a hesitant prod forward.

A ghastly silence around Edgbaston as Jason Roy walked off. Partly because half the spectators are still out the back having lunch, but the opener's misery was unmissable, crashing his bat into the turf as replays signalled that the review would not save him.

  15. Eng 5-1published at 1 over

Root is off the mark to his first ball, knocking a full delivery off his pads for a single. Hales gets on strike and gets behind everything Starc spears down at him, meeting it with a straight bat.

Joe Root is the new man in. Looking at the replay, Roy didn't even discuss the review with Hales - he made the T-sign as he was jogging down the wicket. It just looked out, though.

    Roy lbw b Starc 4 (Eng 4-1)

Out. It is horribly out. Oh, Jason Roy. That was quick, straight and Roy played all around it. And he'd smacked the first ball so nicely for four too! England are a man down, and they've lost their review to the second ball of the innings.

It didn't quite look right for me. I'm going for not out. It was the shot of a man in horrible form.

Roy got done for pace there, his feet didn't move from the crease. Oh, I think that's out...
