320 is the old 250. The single is the new dot ball, especially at the end of the innings.

  2. SA 99-1published at 21 overs

    De Kock 44, Plessis 13

Jadeja, with his William Shakespeare-esque facial hair, keeps it nice and tight as South Africa edge closer to their 100 with five singles from the over. Kholi and Dhoni in deep discussion, looking to strike again with these two looking fairly comfortable at the crease.

Amla is the only man to have gone today - he found it difficult to find runs but he did do this...

  4. SA 94-1published at 20 overs

Shot. An off-side heavy field, de Kock whips a full delivery through to deep square-leg for four.

A more aggresive approach from South Africa from when Amla was in, 10 from the over.

"Ohhhh Ravi Jadeja" sing the crowd. We saw the England fans in full voice yesterday, can India match them? I have a feeling they can.

Adam Wheeler: AB should be in at 3 to bat as many overs possible. Need 320-plus against India's batting line-up.

  6. SA 84-1published at 19 overs

De Kock 37, Du Plessis 6

Faf du Plessis is the new man in - he scored 75 in the opening match against Sri Lanka. He has no trouble in finding the runs straight away, easily picking up whatever Jadeja has to throw at him. Seven from the over. This game still evenly balanced, you'd say.

De Kock is a very underrated batsman. Wouldn't be surprised if he went on to make a big score today.

  8. SA 77-1published at 18 overs

Was this a stumping chance? Yes, it was. Ashwin drifts down the leg side, Dhoni can't hold it but, had he done, De Kock was out of his crease.

Another look at Pandya's drop off Amla. Luckily for him, it only cost his side 19 runs.

Ashwin is in the side to take wickets and that's exactly what he's done. It's a brilliant catch by Dhoni. Amla hasn't been certain today.

  10. wicket

    Amla c Dhoni b Ashwin 35 (SA 76-1)

They won't get to 20 overs without losing a wicket. The man brought into the India team, Ravichandran Ashwin, has got the breakthrough.

He gets a wide one to skid on a little, Amla looks to cut but edges it into the gloves of Dhoni. A smart take from the veteran behind the stumps.

I've seen Graeme Smith but other than that I've not seen a South African in the ground.

  12. SA 71-0published at 17 overs

Spin from both ends now as Ravindra Jadeja and his slow left-arm is introduced. Tight first over, four singles conceded. If South Africa get to 20 overs without loss they'd be content, especially with the firepower still to come.

Ashwin bowls like a chap trying to remove the top off a very, very difficult jar of marmalade.

  14. SA 67-0published at 16 overs

    De Kock 33, Amla 29

Amla takes a good look around The Oval, trying to spot the gaps. He's happy to not take too many risks against Ashwin as the pair rotate the strike, picking up five singles for their efforts. Sun piercing through the clouds, it's a glorious day in London.

That was spectacular. This is what batsmen can do these days. Amla has been so watchful until now. It was into the slot, Amla walked across his stumps and lifted it over the boundary.

  16. 6 runs

    SA 62-0published at 15 overs

There we go, Kuni. Your tweet seems to have done the trick. Amla finds that short boundary on the leg. Pandya gives him too much width, Amla has a little trot across his wicket and flicks for a maximum. A few more of those and we will no longer be discussing the slow run-rate.

He goes walkies again to work one off the pads down to the fine-leg boundary for another four. Just two balls went for runs in that over - but they went for a six and a four. South Africa's best over of the day.

Kuni Poonasamy: QdK should have a word with Amla... remind him Test series against England is in July and not now.

  18. SA 52-0published at 14 overs

It was a clever time to bring on Ashwin, who races through another over. Amla has taken 41 balls to reach 17. The 50 is up South Africa, though - they'll be happy to still have both openers in.

By everyone's standards, you'd expect that to be caught. Pandya didn't have to move, it was straight at him. He might have been expecting it to arrive more quickly.

  20. dropped catch

Amla dropped on 16published at 13 overs

    SA 50-0

The pressure builds and South Africa go for another danger run. De Kock punches it to Kohli at mid-on, they go for a single and Kohli's throw misses the stumps. He would have been a mile out and Kohli knows it, hands on head as he falls back, nearly doing a crab.

Then another chance, more than half a chance, as Amla hits it straight back to Pandya, the bowler, and it seems to go through his hands. It didn't go too fast and Pandya just couldn't get to it in time. Should have been taken.
