George Gray: Amla is a great batsman, just not the greatest strike rate in this Champions Trophy. Which puts a lot pressure on the middle order.

  2. SA 48-0published at 12 overs

Ashwin really taking the pace off this ball as he gives it some flight. He's too short with his final delivery, and de Kock has all the time in the world to open his body and pull it through to the square leg boundary. A much-needed boundary.

You feel that if South Africa don't get over 300, with the short boundary on one side and India's power in the batting, it will be hard for them to compete.

  4. SA 41-0published at 11 overs

A change at both ends as Hardik Pandya comes into the attack. Just as I said, India are looking good in the field. Jadeja at point has a go at the stumps and gifts South Africa an overthrow. South Africa find Pandya easier to pick up than the opening seamers, finding the singles with relative ease.

Will Ashwin be underdone? He's had success against De Kock in the past. De Kock stays leg-side of the ball, so Ashwin will target the off stump.

    De Kock 20, Amla 11

Here we go then, it's time for spin as Ravichandran Ashwin makes his first appearance in this tournament - although he did play in the warm-up matches.

Ashwin doing what he does best, keeping it tidy. Finishes up with a corker, pitches on the spot and tempts Amla to go through the big gaps in the off - Amla fails and is lucky not to nick it.

India looking decent in the field, Kohli with a good stop at mid-on.

Just three boundaries for South Africa today, this being the best of the lot ...

  7. SA 33-0published at 9 overs

Bhuvneshwar with some movement, back of a length and finds the gap between Amla's bat and pad. It was also inches over the bails. A beauty as pressure mounts on the openers.

Generally in this tournament, teams haven't scored too rapidly in the first 10 overs. It seems having wickets in hand is more important than all-out aggression. Just three from the over.

  8. How's stat?!published at 11:09 British Summer Time 11 June 2017

Since the last World Cup, South Africa have won 13 of 19 ODIs batting first. India have won only four of 12 chasing.

  9. SA 30-0published at 8 overs

    De Kock 17, Amla 10

Could that stat have had any influence in Kohli's decision to bowl first? Remember, AB de Villiers said he would have batted anyway.

De Kock walks across his stumps, doesn't connect and there's a halfhearted leg-before shout from Bumrah, but it pitched well outside leg. Amla finding the middle of the bat but also finding the fielder. India crowd getting louder as the day goes on. A sea of blue at The Oval.

Of the last 15 completed ODIs here, the chasing team has won 11 and lost four.

  11. SA 28-0published at 7 overs

There's little sign of that intensity Graeme Smith speaks of, another tidy over from Bhuvneshwar.

Three play-and-misses from de Kock, Bhuvneshwar Kumar winning this battle. The first one, the South African looks to pull, the second one he looks to drive, the third one he looks to defend. All three go through to Dhoni behind the stumps.

I'd like a little more intensity from South Africa. Amla and De Kock are both positive players. Now they've had a few balls I'd like to see them get going. Maybe they're afraid to get out.

  13. SA 26-0published at 6 overs

Bumrah bowling well, occasionally straying onto the legs of the left-handed de Kock who can work it off his pads.

A misfield from Yuvraj Singh at midwicket nearly works out in India's favour, as de Kock sees it as an opportunity to look for a single, opts against it and manages to get back to his crease in time.

Amla, one step back into his crease, onto his tip toes and steered past backward point for an elegant four. Best shot of the morning for me.

Gaurav Shrivastava: Excited to see Ashwin playing, mixes up things nicely. SA needs ABD to fire if they expect 350, below which anything is too easy.

  15. SA 21-0published at 5 overs

    De Kock 15, Amla 4

Full from Bhuvneshwar, off the pads and down to the fine leg boundary for four leg-byes. South Africa looking for another single nearly get into trouble running between the wicket again. Amla would have been safe but didn't look in too much of a hurry to get back. Five from it.

  16. SA 16-0published at 4 overs

A sweet straight drive from de Kock for South Africa's first boundary of the innings. Pitched up from Bumrah and punched by the opener, nice shot.

Amla misjudges a pull, the ball loops up off the thigh pad and he loses sight of the ball. Not knowing where it is, Amla protects the stumps with his body.

That four from the first ball means South Africa are comfortable in taking the odd single. Seven from it. Celeb spot - Eamonn Holmes in one of the posh booths here this morning.

Run rate the key to deciding England's semi final opponents. Looks like it will be the winner of the other match but.......

  18. SA 8-0published at 3 overs

Direct hit and Amla may have been gone! Dabbed down the ground, they go for a quick single but Kohli's diving under-arm throw from mid-off is well wide. Replays confirm he would have been out. Lifeline for Amla? De Kock whips one off his legs to deep-midwicket for two.

A discussion going on here at BBC Sport towers: should Amla be held in the same regard as Kohli? Does he get enough credit?

  20. SA 4-0published at 2 overs

Jasprit Bumrah, still to take a wicket in this tournament, takes the second new ball.

An unorthodox action but effective, tucking up Amla with a tight line.

Just two from the over. Solid start from India. Nothing spectacular from South Africa, yet.
