Friday certainly was a good one for Lancashire all-rounder Jordan Clark as he registered his maiden first-class century to help rescue his side from a perilous position against Surrey.

Clark (108 not out) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (85 not out) have added 172 runs for the seventh wicket so far after the Red Rose were in some strife at 122-6.

West Indies veteran Chanderpaul will be hoping to bring up a ton of his own on day two.

Former England captain Alastair Cook made a handy unbeaten 39 in his first match since retiring as skipper on the national side.

Under testing conditions at Taunton, Cook initially dug in before sending Jamie Overton for three consecutive fours as he found his rhythm.

Essex's bowlers had earlier bowled supremely to dismiss Somerset for 209.

Ah, the soothing trademark words there of the late Richie Benaud are very appropriate at the start of another day of County Championship action.

The Easter holiday weekend feast of cricket continues here on BBC Sport and after several talking points from day one of our nine matches, let's hope for much more of the same today.

Weather permitting, play is set to get under way in about 15 minutes and we'll recap the headlines from yesterday shortly....
