    Sussex v Kent 276-8

And another Kent wicket falls late in the day at Hove.

Jofra Archer bags his fifth wicket of the innings as James Tredwell departs for just a single.

Another impressive display from the young right-armer.

  2. wicket

    WICKET Browne (b C Overton) 11published at 17:52 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 209 v Essex 17-1

Nick Browne's indifferent start to the season continues as Craig Overton somehow sneaks the ball past his bat and clatters into his stumps.

Alastair Cook is joined at the crease by Tom Westley.

  3. wicket

WICKET Stevens (c Brown b Shahzad) 68published at 17:47 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Sussex v Kent 275-7

The Darren Stevens fireworks display has ended for Kent at Hove.

He and Wayne Parnell (40 not out) added 123 runs for the seventh wicket before Ajmal Shahzad found Stevens' outside edge.

Eleven fours and a six in that knock from the 41-year-old including hitting a six and a four in an expensive over of 19 runs from Vernon Philander.

  4. Cook survives lbw shoutpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 209 v Essex 13-0

Alastair Cook survives a huge lbw shout off Lewis Gregory before sending the Somerset bowler to the boundary edge with a sublime drive in front a the paltry remaining crowd at Taunton.

The England opener is facing a tough task to survive the evening at the crease.

  5. Worcestershire take command in Cardiffpublished at 17:43 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Glamorgan 207 v Worcestershire 160-4

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

Worcestershire's fifth wicket pair of Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Ben Cox have put their side back on top, doubling their score in the Cardiff gloom after a topsy-turvy day's action.

Earlier Joe Clarke (39) and Tom Fell (35) took the score from 1 for 2 to 80 for 2 before falling in successive overs.

Glamorgan were relieved to get to 207 all out thanks to David Lloyd's 88, after making another dreadful start to the game, losing eight wickets in the first session.

But Worcestershire look set to take the lead tonight if the light holds out long enough.

  6. Back out at The Ovalpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Surrey v Lancashire 249-6

Back on at Taunton and now back on at The Oval after earlier bad light...

  7. rain stops play

Play abandoned at Derbypublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Derbyshire 219-6 v Northamptonshire

As Alex Winter's earlier post hinted, that's your lot for the day in the East Midlands.

The rain has curtailed the opening day of that game and they'll cross their fingers they can return tomorrow morning without any further disruption.

  8. 100 runs

100 partnership for Kentpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Sussex v Kent 264-6

Darren Stevens (64) and Wayne Parnell (40) have been enjoying themselves in the middle for Kent at Hove.

After slumping to 152-6 in the afternoon session, this pair have now added 112 for the seventh wicket to give their first innings a bit more respectability.

  9. Play resumes at Tauntonpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 209 v Essex 2-0

By some miracle the huge booming black cloud has departed and the players are back out at Taunton.

No overs lost as of yet but that may well change as close of play comes closer.

  10. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Derbypublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Derbyshire 219-6 v Northamptonshire

    Alex Winter
BBC Radio Northampton sport at Derby

Looking like the close at Derby with light rain falling, the skies very dark and the covers put into place.

It's a shame because the day was entering a crucial phases with nine overs until the new ball and two new batsmen at the crease. But that battle will probably have to wait until tomorrow now.

Derbyshire's 219-6 may be a few too many for Northants' liking - they lost control of the day in the hour before tea where Gary Wilson went merrily along but you'd have to call it an even first day.

  11. Bad light stops play at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Durham 162 v Notts 85-3

More bad light doing the rounds and this time it's up in the north east where play has been halted now.

Still 25 overs scheduled to be bowled in the day, but we're on hold for the time being.

  12. wicket

WICKET Voges (b Abbott) 24published at 17:18 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Hampshire v Middlesex 258-5

And that new ball immediately does the trick for Hampshire.

Kyle Abbott forces a loose shot off Adam Voges who under-edges on to his stumps as he tries to cut one away.

Tilting towards honours even now this one.

  13. new ball

New ball taken at Ageas Bowlpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Hampshire v Middlesex 252-4

No gloom at the moment in Hampshire, where play continues.

Hampshire have taken the new ball as they look for a few more scalps before the end of this first day.

  15. Bad light stops play in Tauntonpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 209 v Essex 2-0

Alastair Cook survives a testing over of fierce bowling from Craig Overton before the umpires decide it is too dark for fast bowling in Taunton.

Somerset captain Tom Abell was given the option of using his spinners but after conferring with Marcus Trescothick, the players are brought off.

No imminent rain but there is a heavy cloud that looks set to stay for the evening.

    Warwickshire 152-8 v Yorkshire

Covers coming off. Still darker than an outhouse.

Play to resume at 17:15. Plenty of time for it to rain again.

  17. Plenty of turn on showpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 209 v Essex 0-0

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Somerset at Taunton

Shades of 2016 as Somerset are bowled out for just 209 in their first innings, with the old firm of Trego and Hildreth the main contributors with 48 and 36 respectively.

There's plenty of turn for the spinners, but the Essex seamers played their part as well, in keeping the pressure on.

How good a total is 209?  We'll know more when Essex have had their turn, starting with former England captain Alastair Cook and his opening partner Nick Browne.

  18. A period of calm descends in Chester-le-Streetpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Durham 162 v Notts 56-3

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle

The tea interval seems to have come at a good time for Notts who were reeling on 7-3 just before it but have now reached the relative calm of 56-3 in their first innings in Chester-le-Street.

Samit Patel has 22, but survived a massive shout for lbw from Graham Onions before the interval, a decision from umpire Peter Hartley which saw Durham captain Paul Collingwood spit his chewing gum out in disbelief.

Michael Lumb, a regular thorn in the Durham side over the years, has 20. There are still 32 overs to go today and it remains gloomy and cold and the floodlights are on.

  19. Bad light stops playpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Surrey v Lancashire 249-6

So rain at Edgbaston and gloomy skies in London it would appear as the players go off for bad light at The Oval.

Jordan Clark (76) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (72) would probably both happily continue, but it's the umpires choice remember.

The Lancashire pair have now added 127 runs for the seventh wicket.

  20. rain stops play

Rain returns to Edgbastonpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Warwickshire 152-8 v Yorkshire

    Stephan Shemilt
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

The covers were off, now they are very much needed again as the rain returns.

Don't rule it out that this one is done for the day. The rain isn't heavy, but it's persistent and annoying - like Jack Russell's batting.
