Summary

  • Former England captain Alastair Cook makes unbeaten 39 for Essex v Somerset

  • Lancashire all-rounder Jordan Clark scores maiden first-class 100 v Surrey

  • Sam Robson leads way with 84 for Champions Middlesex against Hampshire

  1. wicket

    WICKET C Overton (c Wheater b Wagner) 10published at 16:45 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 209 v Essex

Four byes helped Somerset pass 200 and reach their first batting bonus point but Craig Overton skies an attempted pull shot and is caught easily by wicketkeeper Adam Wheater off Neil Wagner.

On a spinning pitch, with Essex having to bat last, the hosts have posted a very competitive first innings score

  2. wicket

WICKET Eskinazi (b Ervine) 82published at 16:43 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Hampshire v Middlesex 224-4

Two quick wickets go down at the Ageas Bowl as Hampshire claim another set man at the crease, this time it's Stevie Eskinazi.

Sean Ervine finds a way through his defences and the right-hander is dismissed 18 short of a century.

Strong start to this evening session from the hosts as John Simpson comes in to join Adam Voges.

  3. Archer turns game around for Sussexpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Kent 180-6 v Sussex

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Radio Kent at Hove

Kent were sitting pretty at 116-2 during the second session of the first day at Hove.

Sean Dickson and Sam Northeast were batting beautifully, albeit attritionally, as they appeared to be building a substantial innings together.

But Northeast's wicket started a middle-order collapse, with Gidman falling soon after. Dickson then fell for 68, and Adam Rouse went first ball.

Jofra Archer was the key bowler during the carnage, his four wickets have turned this first day on its head.

We now have a fascinating evening session on our hands.

  4. Leicestershire get the breakthroughpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Gloucestershire 205-4 v Leicestershire

    Bob Hunt
    BBC Radio Gloucestershire

Ben Raine has been the best Leicestershire bowler and he has at last got his reward.

He enticed Graeme Van Buuren into a false shot on 79, who was snapped up behind the stumps; nevertheless it is the home side who are still on top with Will Tavare still there with a patient 58.

The visitors' bowling has been largely lacking penetration and Gloucestershire will be looking to make at least 300 by stumps.

  5. Buck ends Smit's resistancepublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Derbyshire 210-5 v Northamptonshire

    Alex Winter
BBC Radio Northampton sport at Derby

A much-needed breakthrough for Northamptonshire six overs after tea. 92 runs were added for the fifth wicket at a good lick - over four-an-over for the most part - but Nathan Buck has dismissed Daryn Smit for 19.

Gary Wilson remains and this is looking more like an immensely valuable innings for his side on this chilly afternoon. Can he find another partner in the lower order?

  6. Somerset nine downpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 197-9 v Essex

Ashar Zaidi has his third scalp of the innings as he bowls Jamie Overton for three.

Can Somerset reach 200 and get at least one batting bonus point?

  7. 16:40 BST restart at Edgbastonpublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Warwickshire 152-8 v Yorkshire

We're hoping to have another resumption of play at Edgbaston at 16:40.

Warwickshire will be hoping Keith Barker's innings doesn't end in the same fashion as Jeetan Patel's - who fell as the restart of previous rain break!

  8. wicket

WICKET Malan (c Ervine b Wheal) 43published at 16:29 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Hampshire v Middlesex 220-3

A much-needed wicket for Hampshire, who are already a bowler light with Fidel Edwards' hamstring injury.

Dawid Malan tries to drive at a wide-ish one from Brad Wheal and edges it through to the waiting hands of Sean Ervine in the slips.

End of a 70-run third wicket partnership with Stevie Eskinazi who has 74. Adam Voges the new man in.

  9. 100 runs

100 partnership for Lancashirepublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Surrey v Lancashire 225-6

Jordan Clark picks up from where he left off for Lancashire before tea and cracks another four off Sam Curran to bring up a 100 partnership for the seventh wicket between him and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

It's been a while since Surrey made a breakthrough, nearly 30 overs in fact.

Thanks Kalika, you've got me off to a perfect start for the evening session with that wicket at Taunton.

Could be a few early finishes on the cards in this round the way things have been going so far.

  12. wicket

WICKET Trego (c Zaidi b Harmer) 48published at 16:19 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 188-8 v Essex

Just the start Essex would have wanted after the tea interval.

Peter Trego can only top edge an attempted sweep to Ashar Zaidi off Simon Harmer at short fine-leg and departs two short of his half century.

As the final session of the day gets under way and umpires make their way back out to the middle across the country I'm going to hand back over to my colleague Adam Williams.

Hopefully there are still plenty of more wickets to come!

  14. Chanderpaul drops anchorpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Lancashire 214-6 v Surrey

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire

Lancashire signed Shivnarine Chanderpaul for moments just like these.

Without the experience and crucially the runs that Alviro Petersen brought last year, Glen Chapple, signed a man who might be almost two years his senior but his desire to score runs and occupy the crease hasn't changed since he first broke onto the international scene in 1994.

Jordan Clark was only four years old when Chanderpaul made his test debut and the Cumbrian has offered superb support with his own brand of positive front foot batting while admiring some vintage Chanderpaul at the other end.

  15. Topsy-turvy day in Walespublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Glamorgan 207 v Worcestershire 47-2

    Peter Miller
    BBC Sport at Cardiff

It is questionable whether “momentum” is a real thing in cricket, but the period between lunch and tea that saw Glamorgan come back into this game with 102 runs for the last two wickets and then reducing Worcestershire to 1-2 in the second over would lead some to argue for its existence.

Since then a solid stand between Joe Clarke and Tom Fell has brought Worcestershire back into things.

Despite 12 wickets falling so far today there are few horrors in this Cardiff pitch. It has been a topsy-turvy day, but it feels like Worcestershire are still just in front on.

  16. Absorbing afternoon in Tauntonpublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 186-7 v Essex

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Somerset at Taunton

    James HildrethImage source, Rex Features

A fascinating afternoon's cricket, with Somerset losing five wickets for 91, to sharp turn from one end, and hostile leg theory, purveyed mainly by Neil Wagner, from the other.

James Hildreth (pictured above) looked in great form until he top-edged Porter to long leg for 36, and Somerset's hopes of 250+ now rest mainly with Peter Trego, who has battled his way to 48.

No sign yet of any residual animosity between Ashar Zaidi and Craig Overton after their spat at Hove in September 2015.

  17. Middlesex make hay whilst Hampshire drop catchespublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Middlesex 210-2 v Hampshire

    Kevan James

    Kyle AbbottImage source, Rex Features

Sam Robson and Stevie Eskinazi have both benefited from dropped catches as Hampshire struggle to find the same intensity that served them so well at Yorkshire last week.

The unlucky bowler on both occassions was Kyle Abbott (above). Robson was dropped at second slip whilst on 40, and Eskinazi at extra cover (58).

Fidel Edwards is still off the field with what looks like a hamstring problem, unofficial reports at the stage put him out for a couple of weeks.

  18. Dropped catches costing Leicestershirepublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Gloucestershire 200-2 v Leicestershire

    Richard Rae
    BBC Radio Leicester Sport

There was no surprise when Mark Cosgrove put Gloucestershire in to bat at the Brightside Ground, but the Leicestershire skipper has been grievously let down by his bowlers and fielders.

The wicket has played better than it looks as though it should have done, but the seam bowling has been inconsistent at best, while four catches have been dropped.

Graeme Van Buuren  - who averages very close to 50 in first-class cricket - has looked in good touch, and he and Will Tavare have batted their way through the entire afternoon session without being parted.

Cosgrove, who doesn't like bowling, made a point by bringing himself on after just 45 overs, and was more economical than most of the front-liners. Words may be exchanged during the tea interval.

  19. Latest scorespublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

Weather hokey-cokey in Birmingham, with the rain once again intervening.

The grey blanket that covers Edgbaston rather mirrors the mood around the Warwickshire batting line-up, with Keith Barker (pictured above) being left to drag the Bears to something respectable.

Would 200 be competitive? Yorkshire do have batting concerns of their own.
