Hampshire's opening attack of Fidel Edwards and Kyle Abbott (pictured above) have taken a little time to find the right line and length.

Edwards allowed Sam Robson too much room in the first couple of overs, and he benefited with a couple of boundaries square on the off side.

Abbott, whose line and length was so immaculate last week at Yorkshire, has lacked consistency too.

Robson and Nick Gubbins will be happy that they haven't been tested nearly as hard as they might have.

  2. Kent's solid start ruinedpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Kent 28-1 v Sussex

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Radio Kent

It's not that odd an occurance in cricket to see the off-stump splayed after a misjudged leave.

But to see the middle pole go? Now that is a seldom seen dismissal.

Kent's Daniel Bell-Drummond is the man who has had this embarrasing situation befall him, after an absolute belter from Sussex bowler Jofra Archer sent his middle peg down the sea to Brighton.

The visitors' impressive early start has been somewhat ruined.

    Surrey v Lancashire 31-2

I was about to start typing that Lancashire have starting rebuilding after losing Haseeb Hameed second ball, but a Curran brother has gone and done the business again for Surrey.

It's Tom in the wickets this time after younger sibling Sam did the business earlier and Luke Procter is caught in the slips by Scott Borthwick.

    Somerset 31-0 v Essex

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Somerset at Taunton

A musical morning at Taunton, as a composed Dean Elgar deals effectively with Neil Wagner's variations, or possibly the other way round!

A good toss to win for Somerset it would seem so far.

  5. Play resumes at Chester-Le-Streetpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Durham 10-1 v Nottinghamshire

The rain has ceased and Keaton Jennings and Jack Burnham return to the crease for Durham.

Jake Ball continues for with the ball for Notts.

    Derbyshire 22-0 v Northamptonshire

    Dave Fletcher
    BBC Radio Derby Sport

Play started on time at Derby where Northamptonshire are the visitors. But the 2017 campaign began with the floodlights on!

Jeevan Mendis, Gary Wilson, Luis Reece and Daryn Smit make their debuts for the home side, who have been put into bat.

  7. Overcast in Bristolpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Gloucestershire 27-0 v Leicestershire

    Isabelle Duncan
    BBC Sport at Bristol

It's a gloomy day here at Bristol and predictably Leicestershire chose to field with an uncontested toss.

Seamer Zak Chappell will not feature for the visitors due to a side strain with new coach Pierre du Bruyn preferring Richard Jones and his right arm medium fast.

The pitch has a green tinge around the edges with a dry middle and a few cracks appearing.

  8. Somerset ticking along nicelypublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Somerset 28-0 v Essex

The evergreen Marcus Trescothick is showing no signs of ageing, having played two sublime off drives, as he looks to lead Somerset a first victory for the season.

Dean Elgar is also enjoying himself in the sun in the West, with Somerset's opening pair having navigated the first half an hour of the day without much alarm.

That rain break up at Chester-le-Street means BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra have switched their coverage for the meanwhile to the Ageas Bowl for the game between Hampshire and Middlesex.

You can listen live online and on the your digital radio until 11:55 until the station joins the first practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

    Hampshire v Middlesex 21-0

    Robson and GubbingsImage source, rex

Middlesex have had to wait until the second round to start their Championship defence and they do so over this Easter weekend at the Ageas Bowl against Hampshire.

Captain James Franklin won the toss earlier and chose to bat and his openers Nick Gubbings and Sam Robson have so far negotiated the opening six overs unscathed.

WICKET Porterfield (c Ballance b Coad) 16published at 11:24 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Warwickshire 21-1 v Yorkshire

Yorkshire have an early breakthrough at Edgbaston as William Porterfield chips Ben Coad to Gary Ballance at mid-off.

A good early wicket for the visitors with both teams having suffered defeats in week one.

  12. rain stops play

    Durham 10-1 v Nottinghamshire

Seconds after Keaton Jennings laces James Pattinson away to the boundary rope the rain starts to fall at Chester-Le-Street.

A gloomy start, on and off the pitch, up north.

  13. wicket

WICKET Cook (c Read b Ball) 2published at 11:13 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Durham 6-1 v Nottinghamshire

Not the start to life in Division Two that Durham would have wanted.

Debutant Stephen Cook misjudges a leave and edges Jake Ball behind into the safe hands of Chris Read for just two.

  14. Two early season favourites go head to headpublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Sussex v Kent 11-0

Maybe it's the sea air, the seagulls or the nightlife, but Hove has been a happy hunting ground for Kent.

They have won their past two visits to the County Ground in all forms of the game, including a whopping innings victory in August, and they are unbeaten in five first class matches against Sussex (W2 D3).

Hove looks a picture this morning

This game sees two strong Division Two sides go head to head, with Kent's 334-run win against Gloucestershire certainly turning heads.

Sussex, who play their first game of the campaign today, will hope to recover from a disappointing 2016, and have an impressive South African flavoured squad to pick from.

Kent make two changes from that win at Canterbury last week, in comes Dickson for Weatherley at the top of the order, and Wayne Parnell makes his Kent debut, replacing James Harris.

Meanwhile, Steve Magoffin misses out with a knee niggle for Sussex. Evans, Van Zyl, Philander and Rawlins all make their first-class debuts.

We talked about England players in action in this round and one of them has already been and gone at the Oval.

Haseeb Hameed lasts just two balls at the top of Lancashire's order as he is caught behind off the bowling of Sam Curran without scoring.

    Great start for Surrey.

  16. Chilly second citypublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

    Warwickshire 2-0 v Yorkshire

    Stephan Shemilt
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

Remember the sunshine of the opening weekend? I hope you enjoyed your summer. It's cold in Birmingham, coats and scarves rather than suncream and shades.

Both of these were beaten on the opening weekend - Warwickshire shellacked by Surrey, Yorkshire stunned by Hampshire. The Bears are unchanged, but Yorkshire can call on England pair David Willey and Adil Rashid.

Charcoal grey, the lights are on. Expect it to hoop about. Absolutely no surprise in the visitors jumping at the chance to bowl first.

    Sunshine greets season start

Last week's first round result threw up a few surprises in Division One while some of the Division Two results seemed to indicate perhaps not all of the players had returned from their winter hibernation.

    Here's a recap:

    Division One

    • Jimmy Adams' 72 helped Hampshire clinch a thrilling four-wicket win over Yorkshire.
    • Mark Footit's devastating first innings 6-14 gave Surrey a convincing innings win over Warwickshire.
    • A brilliant unbeaten 141 from Essex teenager Dan Lawrence helped the newly-promoted side hold on for a draw against Lancashire.

    Division Two

    • Northamptonshire's Rory Kleinveldt took six wickets and hit 86 to send Glamorgan to an innings and 22-run defeat.
    • James Pattinson's second innings five-wicket haul gave Nottinghamshire a comfortable 10 wicket win over Leicestershire.
    • Kent secured a 334 runs victory over Gloucestershire as Darren Stevens starred with the ball.
  20. Fans await Cook's returnpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 14 April 2017

There was a hefty queue this morning at Somerset's County Ground in anticipation of Alastair Cook's appearance.

But, with Somerset winning the toss and electing to bat first, it'll be a while before Cook straps on the pads.

Many of the home faithful will also be getting the first glimpse of their team this season following the heartbreak of missing out on an inaugural Championship title.

Can they finally lift the trophy this season?
