Summary

  • Lancashire beat Somerset by 164 runs at Old Trafford

  • Bad light denies Middlesex in draw with Essex at Lord's

  • Yorkshire's Gary Ballance hits double century in draw with Hants

  • Ian Bell out for 99 in Warwickshire draw with Surrey

  • Both Division Two games end in draws

  1. wicket

    WICKET Handscomb (c & b Dawson) 40published at 12:19 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Hampshire 455 v Yorkshire 231 & 258-4 (79 overs)

Australia Test batsman Peter Handscomb gives a return catch to spinner Liam Dawson, ending his 88-run stand with Gary Ballance. Jonny Bairstow is the new batsman, having made only seven in the first innings, so Yorkshire now have two England batsmen at the crease. Ballance is unbeaten on 114.

  2. wicket

WICKET Westley (lbw Roland-Jones) 13published at 12:18 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Middlesex 507-7 dec & 239-3 dec v Essex 295 & 74-2 (22.2 overs) - target 452

Another breakthrough for Middlesex as Toby Roland-Jones keeps the ball really low and Tom Westley is trapped in front.

Roland-Jones was so excited by how low the ball kept he forget to appeal, which was slightly naughty from the hosts seamer.

Arguably Essex's two best batsmen are at the crease now as teenage wonder-kid Dan Lawrence joins Alastair Cook at the crease.

  3. Gregory cleans up Lancashire tailpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Lancashire 109 & 463 (161 overs) v Somerset 278

Three wickets in successive overs bring Lancashire's second innings to an end, and the target for Somerset will be 295.

Lewis Gregory finishes things off by having Stephen Parry caught behind for 44, and that's final figures of 5-74 for the Somerset seamer, the ninth time he has taken five or more wickets in a first-class innings.

  4. Leicestershire look to press onpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Leicestershire 420 & 247-5 (72 overs) v Glamorgan 426

    Nick Webb
    BBC Wales Sport

Leicestershire were prevented from accelerated towards a declaration in the first hour as Marchant de Lange and Michael Hogan bowled tightly in cloudy conditions.

De Lange had Ned Eckersley caught at slip for 73 and Cameron Delport caught at mid-off for one, while Hogan had huge appeals against both Mark Pettini and Lewis Hill rejected.

The sixth-wicket pair eventually stepped up the run-rate as Pettini reached his 50, having taken half-an-hour to score his first run of the morning, while Hill started swinging hard at the other end.

  5. wicket

WICKET Jarvis (c Leach b Groenewald) 0published at 12:08 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Lancashire 109 & 461-9 (160 overs) v Somerset 278

Kyle Jarvis lasts just two balls for Lancashire, bringing last man Jimmy Anderson to the middle. The Red Rose county are 293 ahead. Will that be enough? With Jimmy's bowling at their disposal in this game, don't bet against it.

  6. wicket

WICKET McLaren (c Elgar b Gregory) 45published at 12:03 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Lancashire 109 & 456-8 (159 overs) v Somerset 278

Somerset strike for the first time this morning as Lewis Gregory picks up his fourth wicket of the Lancashire second innings. Ryan McLaren is the man to go after a valuable 77-run stand with Stephen Parry, who remains on 43. Lancashire are 287 ahead.

  7. wicket

WICKET Bell (c Foakes b Batty) 99published at 11:56 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Warwickshire 332 & 222-5 (72.1 overs) v Surrey 437

Anyone who has watched Ian Bell over the years must surely find it incredible that he has not scored a Championship hundred since his 174 against Hampshire in the first round of matches in last year's competition. That is still the situation as he falls agonisingly short of three figures at Edgbaston.

Surrey skipper Gareth Batty brought himself on to bowl to hurry things along to the new ball and has claimed Warwickshire's most prized scalp - Bell batting for 209 minutes and hitting 10 fours.

It's a wicket maiden for the off-spinner and Warwickshire's lead is 117, with Rikki Clarke having joined Tim Ambrose at the crease.

  8. 100 runs

Ballance reaches centurypublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Hampshire 455 v Yorkshire 231 & 232-3 (73 overs)

    Gary BallanceImage source, Rex

What a brilliant performance by Gary Ballance in this match, 108 in the first innings and there's another century, reached from 210 balls with a single off Liam Dawson.

It's also his third century - all against Hampshire - of the season and he is certainly rising to the challenge to maintaining his batting form despite the additional responsibility of captaining the team.

Partner Peter Handscomb appears to be in assertive mood at the other end, with three boundaries so far in his 29 not out, and Yorkshire are now eight runs ahead.

  9. Cook watchful for Essexpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Middlesex 507-7 dec & 239-3 dec v Essex 295 & 51-1 (14 overs) - target 452

    Alastair CookImage source, Rex Features

Former England captain Alastair Cook is remaining watchful under testing conditions at Lord's as the Middlesex bowlers probe for more wickets.

A century by Cook is what Essex may need from the opener if they're going to survive the final day - a notion that has a familiar ring to it.

The brief rain delay earlier on meant two overs were lost, so there are 86 left in the day.

  10. Lancashire pair build leadpublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Lancashire 109 & 438-7 (153 overs) v Somerset 278

They're back on at Old Trafford and Ryan McLaren and Stephen Parry have posted a half-century partnership for the eighth wicket. Back-to-back fours off Craig Overton have helped Parry move on to 36 not out, with McLaren on 37. Lancashire are now 269 ahead - and I wonder whether Liam Livingstone will soon be contemplating a declaration.

  11. Gloomy in Bristolpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Goucestershire 303 & 197-3 (61 overs) v Durham 419

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle

Will we get a full day in Bristol? Rain is forecast from 5.00pm and it's murky at the moment. They can't turn the lights on for Championship matches here either.

Durham need early wickets but Chris Dent is continuing to thwart them and now has 71 to go with his 59 from the first innings. He's also added 46 so far with George Hankins.

  12. Tykes face final-day fightpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Hampshire 455 v Yorkshire 231 & 190-3 (67 overs)

No early alarms for Yorkshire at the Ageas Bowl, where Gary Ballance has advanced to 89 not out, as he looks to score his second century of the match. The White Rose county still need another 33 to avoid an innings defeat.

  13. wicket

WICKET Browne (b Murtagh) 19published at 11:24 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Middlesex 507-7 dec & 239-3 dec v Essex 295 & 38-1 (10.1 overs) - target 452

    Nick BrowneImage source, Rex

Nick Browne's luck has run out - having been dropped on eight on Sunday evening - Tim Murtagh bowls the Essex opener through the gate.

Tom Westley joins Alastair Cook at the crease. Middlesex are using the overcast conditions to their advantage at the moment.

  14. Glamorgan pick up early wicketspublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Leicestershire 420 & 205-5 (59 overs) v Glamorgan 426

Marchant de Lange had picked up two early wickets for the visitors at Grace Road, dismissing Ned Eckersley and Cameron Delport in successive overs.

The well-set Eckersley prodded the Glarmorgan paceman to Nick Selman in the slips for 73 and Delport departed for just one after driving straight to Lukas Carey at mid-on.

Just the start the Glamorgan bowlers would have wanted this morning if they're going to make a game of this.

  15. Fast start by Ambrosepublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Warwickshire 332 & 180-4 (62 overs) v Surrey 437

Tim Ambrose is full of beans this morning at Edgbaston, hitting three early boundaries off left-armer Sam Curran, including two from successive balls in the last over. Warwickshire now trail by 76.

  16. Back under way at Lord'spublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Middlesex 507-7 dec & 239-3 dec v Essex 295 & 20-0 (8 overs) - target 452

The players are back at the crease and Tim Murtagh is ready to bowl once more.

We play well be playing the Hokey Cokey with the teams going on and off the pitch today.

  18. Light meters out at Lord'spublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Middlesex 507-7 dec & 239-3 dec v Essex 295 & 20-0 (8 overs) - target 452

Ominous signs at Lord's already and it's the umpires who are taking centre stage.

The light meters are out, it is fairly cloudy and muggy in London today and there is a little bit of rain about.

We could be in for a frustrating day for Middlesex and Essex and the players are taken off the field.

  19. rain stops play

Rain delay at Old Traffordpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

    Lancashire 109 & 423-7 (150.5 overs) v Somerset 278

That's a shame, just 11 balls have been bowled and they're off at Old Trafford. Lancashire have yet to add to their overnight score - they lead by 254.

  20. A few statty bitspublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 24 April 2017

Here are some random pieces of information for you as the action gets under way:

    • Essex's highest successful fourth-innings chase in a Championship match is 442-6 against Derbyshire in 1992 - they need 452 to beat Middlesex in their current game.
    • Somerset batsman Marcus Trescothick needs another 65 runs to reach 25,000 in first-class cricket - and his team are unbeaten away from home in nine matches.
    • Yorkshire are unbeaten in their last six away games against Hampshire - and have only lost three times in their last 45 matches away from Headingley.
    • Hampshire opener Jimmy Adams is 47 runs short of 13,000 in first-class games
    • Durham have not beaten Gloucestershire in any of the last six matches between the two sides.
    • Leicestershire have only lost once in their last 21 matches against Glamorgan at Grace Road.
