Smriti Mandhana had a cruciate ligament injury earlier this year and it looked for a while as though she wouldn't make the World Cup. I remember the Test at Wormsley in 2014 when she was pumping Brunt and Shrubsole over their heads for four.

    Mandhana 8, Raut 2

Here's Katherine Brunt, and her first ball has been clipped for four! That's a lovely bit of batting from Smriti Mandhana, flicking the ball off her hip and down to the rope. I saw Mandhana play the last time India toured England. She has a beautiful cover drive up her sleeve. It's not on show yet, though, as she works another ball off her pads for a couple.

I think it's the ideal toss to win, with the conditions as they are and the bowling attack England have - Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole are seasoned campaigners, and it'll be interesting to see how much movement they get up front.

  4. Ind 3-0published at 1 over

The first ball of the Women's World Cup is driven away by Punam Raut for a couple of runs. The batter leaves a wide delivery but she can't resist a little tickle at a delivery that's angled in and just beats her defensive push. A tidy over from Shrubsole.

I was standing underneath the dressing rooms for the anthems. England coach Mark Robinson and his assistant Ali Maiden were belting it out - proud men. I counted 11 support staff on the England balcony. There were two on India's.

England coach Mark Robinson absolutely belted out the national anthem up on the team balcony. He gets 10/10 for effort. I'm not sure how tuneful it was, mind.

Heather Knight brings her team together for a huddle beyond the boundary rope while India openers Punam Raut and Smriti Mandhana make their way out. It'll be Anya Shrubsole to open up for England.

When she walks out on the pitch at Bristol today, New Zealand leg-spinner Amelia Kerr, 16 (born on 13 October 2000) will become the first cricketer born in the 21st century to play at a major ICC global tournament.

England captain Heather Knight has been busy for the past six weeks.

As well as training for the World Cup, she's filmed a cinema advert, been a model on a catwalk (more Zoolander than Kate Moss), gone back to school and done most of it with a moon boot and crutches!

She reckons Australia, who have won the World Cup six times, are the pre-tournament favourites - but England can't be ruled out on home turf.

India's warm-up matches, on the other hand, haven't been quite as serene.

They were bowled out for 130 against New Zealand in 45.1 overs, and the White Ferns chased that total down in 26.3 overs, for the loss of just three wickets.

Against Sri Lanka, captain Mithali Raj made 85 and opener Punam Raut 69 as India posted 275-8

Sri Lanka's lower order collapsed during the chase, with spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad taking 4-12 as they were bowled out for 166.

Well, England are heading in to today's game in good shape after thrashing New Zealand and Sri Lanka last week.

Captain Heather Knight and returning wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor played themselves into form against Sri Lanka.

Against New Zealand they were strong in all forms, dismissing the White Ferns for just 130 as spinner Laura Marsh claimed 3-7 in 24 balls.

Tammy Beaumont then made her way to a serene half-century as England reached their target in 27.2 overs.

  20. Captain's viewpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 24 June 2017

India captain Mithali Raj: "I would have elected to bowl because of the overcast conditions. It's always good to use a track first.

"I'm happy the way my momentum has been in the build-up to the World Cup. It's good to win oversees series, it gives a lot of confidence. But English conditions are different. We have to start from the beginning."
