  3. That's stumpspublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 436 v Surrey 69-1

And with that, play is at an end at Taunton.

Somerset will be pleased to have earned maximum batting bonus points, thanks mostly to Steven Davies' century and 96 from Tom Abell, but with the forecast looking grim tomorrow, their chances of victory still seem slender.

We'll have a full recap of all the other scores in a couple of minutes' time.

  4. Two overs leftpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 436 v Surrey 69-1

Rory Burns will be furious not to have made it through to stumps unbeaten.

Scott Borthwick is the new man at the crease, yet to score from his first 10 deliveries.

  5. wicket

WICKET Burns (run out) 30published at 18:31 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 436 v Surrey 58-1

Surrey hadn't looked at any risk of losing a wicket before stumps, but Rory Burns is out in disastrous fashion.

He and Mark Stoneman suffer a major breakdown in communication, and it's enough to send Burns back to the dressing room.

  6. Surrey openers looking assuredpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 436 v Surrey 54-0

Another day, another late finish in the County Championship.

There are now a mere seven overs left at Taunton, where Mark Stoneman and Rory Burns are playing the ball nicely, if not excitingly.

We've seen a few calls from you today for Burns as a possible England opener, and Stoneman can consider himself unlucky to have never made a Test side as well.

  7. SUSSEX BEAT WORCESTERSHIRE BY NINE WICKETSpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 8 August 2017
    Breaking

    Sussex 430 & 11-1 v Worcestershire 268 & 170 (f/o)

Despite losing Luke Wells, Sussex wrap up an impressive nine-wicket victory to throw open the Division Two promotion race.

Angus Robson scores the winning runs as he sends Patrick Brown to the boundary ropes.

The visitors have moved up to third in the table, 17 points behind the hosts in second - who have played a match more.

It is all to play for in the second division when the Championship resumes at the end of the month.

  8. Surrey untroubled by Somersetpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 436 v Surrey 46-0

Mark Stoneman and Rory Burns are making it look easy at Somerset.

The Surrey openers have safely negotiated the first 12.3 overs, with 12.3 more still to be played.

  9. wicket

WICKET Wells (c Leach b Barnard) 5published at 18:03 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 & 5-1 v Worcestershire 268 & 170 (f/o)

Sussex can't complete the victory without losing a wicket as Ed Barnard follows up his batting display with the scalp of Luke Wells.

Four runs for the visitors to win at New Road.

  10. Listen to live commentarypublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

The commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live sports extra has switched to the exciting end to proceedings at New Road.

Sussex require nine runs for victory.

  11. wicket

WICKET Barnard (c Whittingham b Van Zyl) 45published at 17:50 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 v Worcestershire 268 & 170 (f/o)

Sussex finally take the last Worcestershire wicket as Ed Barnard is caught for an excellent 45 off Stiaan van Zyl.

The hosts' bowler also made 65 in his side's first innings earlier in the day as he impressed with the bat.

However, the visitors need just nine runs to win and put themselves back into contention in the Division Two title race.

  12. Somerset and Surrey restart at 17:50published at 17:49 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 436 v Surrey 28-0

The rain has stopped at Somerset, so the teams will take back to the field.

There are 17.2 overs left to be bowled.

  13. Worcestershire take the lead at New Roadpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 v Worcestershire 268 & 163-9 (f/o)

Ed Barnard steers Stiaan van Zyl through the covers for a single and takes Worcestershire into the lead for the first time in this match.

It means Sussex will have to bat again and, with a 10 minute innings break, perhaps we may be coming back on Wednesday at New Road after all.

You would hope the umpires would see the sense in allowing the visitors to chase whatever paltry target they may be set this evening.

  14. Sussex deploy slow bowlerspublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 v Worcestershire 268 & 160-9 (f/o)

With the light deteriorating at New Road, Sussex have been forced to bring on their slower bowlers as they desperately attempt to wrap up victory in their Division Two match today.

Spinner Danny Briggs' first over in this innings went for 10 runs but he picked up the vital wicket of Josh Tongue.

Ed Barnard (37 not out) is still going strong and Worcestershire are now just two runs shy of parity with the visitors' first inning total.

  15. wicket

WICKET Tongue (lbw Briggs) 16published at 17:30 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 v Worcestershire 268 & 154-9 (f/o)

Just as I was typing how well Josh Tongue was batting, the 19-year-old is trapped lbw by spinner Danny Briggs.

Sussex, battling against the ever-fading light, are just one wicket away from victory at New Road.

Surely they won't be coming back tomorrow, will they?

  16. rain stops play

Covers back on at Somersetpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 436 v Surrey 28-0

That could be it for the day at Somerset.

The rain is falling again, the light is fading fast, and the players are coming off.

  17. Barnard on the counter-attackpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 v Worcestershire 268 & 137-8

Ed Barnard is refusing to let Worcestershire go down without a fight.

The all-rounder has hit two fours and a six to advance to 25 from 27 deliveries against Sussex, who are being frustrated in their attempts to take the final two wickets needed for victory.

  19. wicket

    WICKET Hastings (c & b Archer) 0published at 17:02 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 v Worcestershire 268 & 110-8 (f/o)

Jofra Archer may have missed out a hat-trick but he has three wickets in five balls after John Hastings sends a fuller ball straight back to the bowler.

After a brilliant 45 minutes post tea, that was a disastrous over for Worcestershire.

The visitors are now just two wickets away from victory at New Road.

  20. ...Hastings survives hat-trick ballpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Sussex 430 v Worcestershire 268 & 110-7 (f/o)

Archer is within a whisker of a hat-trick as the ball brushes past John Hastings' off stump.
