    Middlesex 247 & 96-6 (36 overs) v Surrey 280

Having removed James Franklin with the final ball before lunch, Rikki Clarke strikes again as Toby Roland-Jones registers a five-ball duck. Middlesex are now in serious danger of defeat, just 63 ahead with four wickets left, and the possibility that Nick Compton might not be able to resume his innings.

Warwickshire added 40 from the first nine over of play after the belated start, but the scoring rate slowed after the initial rush that carried Tim Ambrose to his hundred and now his 86-run stand with Jeetan Patel is at an end.

Ryan McLaren takes his third wicket by having Jeetan Patel leg-before and there is only the tail left now to support Ambrose, with the Bears just 11 runs in front.

  3. wicket

WICKET Harmer (lbw b Bess) 2published at 13:50 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Essex 159 & 293-8 (98.3 overs) v Somerset 164

Dom Bess comes into the attack and takes a wicket straight away, striking fellow offspinner Simon Harmer on the pads and winning the following appeal.

Are Essex going to continue to the bitter end? They lead by 288 runs.

    Middlesex 247 & 94-5 (25 overs) v Surrey 280

Still no sign of Nick Compton at The Oval. It's Toby Roland-Jones at the crease for Middlesex after lunch with John Simpson. Surrey still relying on their seamers. The visitors lead by 61.

  5. Worcestershire turn to Ashwin againpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Worcestershire 363 & 295-8d v Gloucestershire 258 & 167-6 (60 overs)

Worcestershire, in pursuit of a much-needed win to keep the pace at the top of Division Two, need to get rid of Phil Mustard (39 not out) and Jack Taylor (27 not out). Joe Leach turns to Indian offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin to try and do just that.

  7. Essex bat onpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Essex 159 & 290-7 (96 overs) v Somerset 164

Essex, through Paul Walter and Simon Harmer, continue batting after the lunch break. There are a scheduled 65 overs to bowl, so a declaration must be coming soon. The lead is 285 runs - I think they have enough already.

  9. 100 runs

for Tim Ambrosepublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Warwickshire 200 & 307-6 (89 overs) v Lancashire 504-8 dec

With so much time lost today because of rain, Warwickshire are going for it with the bat and Tim Ambrose hits a boundary off Kyle Jarvis before three from the next delivery carries him to a superb 156-ball century. They are now three runs ahead, but it would take a miracle for them to force a much-needed win out of this game. Maybe Ambrose is the man to supply it.

  10. 'They're all big games' - Moorespublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Nottinghamshire 213 & 344-9 dec v Northamptonshire 141 & 253-9

Nottinghamshire will now turn their attention to T20 Blast Finals Day after wrapping up a nine-wicket Championship win over Northants at Trent Bridge.

Here's what head coach Peter Moores had to say about their latest victory.

“Really pleased to get it done and get the win in the bank because all four-day wins are hard-fought.

“Other sides at the top keep winning, obviously Sussex won yesterday and Worcestershire are doing well, so it makes next week’s game against them into a really big game.

"Because we’ve been competing on three fronts we haven’t really had any games this season that haven’t been big games.

“We haven’t looked for a draw yet, we’re always looking to win games and we’ll carry that philosophy through to the end.”

  11. Fascinating session at Canterburypublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Leicestershire 350 & 97-4 v Kent 350 - lunch (Leicestershire lead Kent by 114 runs)

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Radio Kent commentator

What an odd morning it has been.

We were all expecting this match to be set up for a result, with a Kent declaration and a Leicestershire thwacking session to follow, which would then set up a tense Kent chase.

We had none of that, except for a small amount of thwacking, but the game is still nicely poised.

    Mark CosgroveImage source, Getty Images

One thing I can tell you is not to make Leicestershire batsman Mark Cosgrove angry. The Australian was furious that Kent claimed a catch off what appeared to be a bump ball, and proceeded to launch the ball to all corners of the ground.

He hit 24 off the first five deliveries of Matt Coles' over (who incidentally had figutes of 3-0-40-1), before being caught off the sixth delivery for a quickfire 34. Kent have otherwise been accurate, and will hope to bowl the visitors out quickly to set up an unlikely victory.

The rain could spoil the party, with a light downpour taking the players off just before the interval.

    Warwickshire 200 & 282-6 (86 overs) v Lancashire 504-8 dec

Kyle Jarvis finds the edge of Tim Ambrose's bat in the first over following the delayed start, but the ball runs away to third man for four. Ryan McLaren will open up at the other end.

    Leicestershire 350 & 97-4 v Kent 333

    Nottinghamshire 213 & 344-9 dec v Northamptonshire 141 & 253-9

  15. Worcestershire four wickets awaypublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Worcestershire 363 & 295-8d v Gloucestershire 258 & 161-6 (58 overs)

Worcestershire go into the break still needing four wickets as Jack Taylor (21 not out) and Phil Mustard (38 not out) are still there.

Gloucestershire, incidentally, need 240 runs for their victory.

  16. wicket

WICKET Franklin (c Foakes b Clarke) 15published at 13:04 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Middlesex 247 & 86-5 (33.5 overs) v Surrey 280

Some dodgy weather is massing near the Oval but Surrey will enjoy their lunch after Rikki Clarke has James Franklin caught behind with the final ball before the interval.

Middlesex are only 53 ahead and Nick Compton has been unable to bat so far today because of a back spasm. Perhaps he won't have any choice other than to 'grin and bear it' with his side in a precarious position.

    Essex 159 & 284-7 (95.1 overs) v Somerset 164

Another wicket down on the stroke of lunch as Ryan ten Doeschate prods forward and edges to Marcus Trescothick at slip off the left-arm spin of Jack Leach.

Good stuff from the visitors. With a lead of 279, what will Essex decide? Surely they'll want a bigger lead before declaring, with 67 overs left to play today.

  18. Bears set to resume inningspublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Warwickshire 200 & 275-6 (85 overs) v Lancashire 504-8 dec

Good news at Old Trafford where the umpires plan to start play at 13:10 BST. A reminder of the match situation - Warwickshire are 29 runs behind with four wickets remaining, with a minimum of 72 overs left in the day.

  19. wicket

    Essex 159 & 284-6 (94.4 overs) v Somerset 164

James Foster is gone, leg-before to Tim Groenewald. It's been a good morning for Essex, though, who now have a lead of 279 runs, with Ryan ten Doeschate unbeaten on 67.

  20. DURHAM BEAT DERBYSHIRE BY 9 WKTSpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 31 August 2017
    Breaking

    Durham 480-9 dec & 39-1 (9.2 overs) v Derbyshire 164 & 354

A maximum-points victory for Durham as Tom Latham hits the first two deliveries of Harry Podmore's fifth over for four and finishes on 23 not out.

It's the north-east county's third win of the season, set up by captain Paul Collingwood's magnificent 177 off 228 balls in their first innings.

It lifts them above Derbyshire to eighth place in the Division two table, and remember, they began the season on -48 points after last summer's financial problems. If those points hadn't been docked, they'd be sixth.
