I'm seriously not good with heights. I was coming up into this commentary box yesterday and had to clutch the handrail, Isa Guha tried to hurry me up but I said "I'm not going any faster!"

Some very colourful fans - dressed in dark pink polo shirts, with matching sombreros - walk around behind the advertising boards as the miserly Schutt begins her seventh over. Beaumont is solid in defence, and - you've guessed it - it's a maiden over.

Australia have hardly given England anything to go at, apart from that one that went through gully.

It's still Perry from the Southern End, conditions at the North Sydney Oval look absolutely terrific and all seem impressed with the crowd so far.

Single from Beaumont, then another good lbw shout from Perry, an inswinger to Winfield who holds her bat high like Jonny Bairstow as the bowler runs in - but that ball was doing too much and the umpire shakes his head again. Perry has 0-9 from six overs.

There have been faster games of cricket, but England have been very watchful. Nothing hugely unsurprising about their start.

Charlotte Edwards on TMS thinks Schutt and Perry may not be on for too much longer - this is Schutt's sixth over, and four of them have been maidens.

    10 overs

Perry, a thick white stripe of sun cream across her nose and cheeks as ever, tries a bouncer, the first we've seen today - Beaumont ducks and it's taken low by keeper Alyssa Healy. Perry has Beaumont scrambling with another lbw appeal as she's struck on the top of the knee-roll, but the umpire remains unmoved.

What a lovely day. Good start from England - no-one's giving in at the moment, Australia have been very disciplined with the ball but would have wanted that early wicket. I'm sure England will up the scoring rate once they've got rid of Perry and Schutt.

The TMS team have noticed that opener Nicole Bolton has been designated as Australia's "ball shiner" - it's going to her between deliveries. Beaumont knocks Schutt for a single - she has seven from 24 deliveries, Winfield has three from 29.

This isn't the only pink-ball game taking place in Australia today - England's men are into the second day of their four-day warm-up against a Cricket Australia XI in Adelaide. Having begun the day on 278-8, the tourists have already been bowled out for 293. Daniel Fallins finished with 5-73.

Cricket fans who despair of slow over-rates in the men's game, take note - Australia have fast bowlers going from both ends, yet have sent down eight overs in only half-an-hour. Winfield and Beaumont find the going slightly easier against Perry, picking up a single apiece, while Winfield is struck on the pad by a delivery clearly sailing down the leg side.

    Schutt 4-3-1-0

Winfield and Beaumont have made their reputation in England's limited-overs sides as getting their team off to a flier, but they've shown good application so far today. Schutt is one delivery away from a fourth successive maiden over when she strays down the leg side and Winfield helps it to fine leg for a single.

Will we see more women's Test cricket in future?

I think it depends on the powers that be - will they see it as commercially viable? Will it bring new people to the game?

That's a more convincing appeal - Beaumont prods forward, misses and is struck on the top of the right thigh. Now, to be fair to Tammy, she's one of the shortest players on the field out there, so it's not as cut-and-dried as if a six-footer were hit on the thigh, but the umpire rules it was going over. A maiden for Perry.

  16. Eng 6-0published at 03:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Schutt 3-3-0-0

Again, there's a less-than-convincing appeal from Schutt as Winfield is rapped on the pad, and the umpire's not interested.

A gentle start for England - the pink ball is behaving itself so far, and Winfield is off the mark as she steers Perry for a single past gully. Meanwhile, fortune favours Beaumont as she edges the last ball of the over just out of the reach of Beth Mooney at gully and it disappears for four.

It's a fairly quiet scene, though there's an excellent crowd. There are plenty of children in, they're over in front of the Doug Walters Stand.

Beaumont is hit on the pad, there's a half-hearted appeal from Schutt. With Schutt favouring the inswinger, Nicole Bolton has been placed in a short mid-wicket position, and it's two maidens for Schutt.
