These 20-minute intervals between the first and second sessions will take a while to get used to, I wouldn't wonder. England and Australia are taking the field for the middle session of day one, resuming on 63-1 after 33 overs.

James Vince played a very James Vince-like innings yesterday - he played beautifully for 33, then the spinner came on, Vince's eyes lit up, he went for an extravagant sweep shot and was bowled. That's almost a microcosm of his England career.

While the players take tea, if you've not seen it, England captain Heather Knight has written her latest BBC Sport column ahead of this Test - it features humpback whales, bell-ringing, Rwanda and Henry Blofeld's cake. (Not necessarily in that order).

I can also recommend my colleague Stephan Shemilt's feature about what England's players have got up to since winning the World Cup. There was even a marriage proposal involved for one player...

It's also "tea" - the 20-minute break between the first two sessions - in Adelaide, where the Cricket Australia XI are 41-2 in reply to England's 293 all out. Jake Ball did take a wicket before he went off injured mid-over.

A tick for this session. Heather Knight did all the right things by winning the toss and batting, as they had picked an extra batter and left out Jenny Gunn. But I think they looked at the wicket - they had Kate Cross and Tash Farrant available, but they would have seen the wicket looks quite dry.

it's been a slow and steady first session. But the beauty is for England that they've got time - which you rarely have in women's cricket as they don't play many Tests. Laying a platform, allowing the ball to get older and not exposing the middle order will be the first tick on the list.

    Eng 63-1

Interesting captaincy from Rachael Haynes - rather than letting the game drift towards the interval with the two spinners on, she's turning back to the pace of Ellyse Perry to have a go at the England captain before tea, with a slip and a gully in. Knight is equal to it, pushing a single to long-on, while there are a few gasps as Beaumont plays and misses. End of the over, the umpire has a look at the clock... and that's tea.

  10. Eng 62-1published at 05:26 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

I've not seen a cloud in the sky over the North Sydney Oval - fans relaxing on the grassy bank are decked out in sunglasses, and (I hope) slip, slop, slapping on the sun cream in that unrelenting Aussie sunshine.

Jonassen spins down another over of left-arm spin - remember, she made 99 and 54 on her Test debut two years ago, despite being primarily in the side for her bowling (with which she took 1-36 and 0-15).

  11. Eng 61-1published at 05:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Wellington 4-0-14-0

Leg-spinner Wellington again lets one fly outside off stump, and Knight is onto it straight away, clubbing it through the covers for one. 31 overs bowled, and time for two - or even three - more before the interval.

  12. Eng 60-1published at 05:21 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Beaumont 36, Knight 18

Just a single from Jonassen's over. England with an eye on the interval.

Remember, England need something from this match to keep the Ashes alive - as an Aussie win would see them take an unassailable 8-2 lead on points with only two points available for each of the three T20 internationals.

If you're just waking up, bleary-eyed, I can tell you that we're just under 15 minutes from "tea", the break between the first and second sessions, which is scheduled to run from 05:30-05:50.

No problem with the over-rate here - Wellington yields a single, that's the 29th over through already.

I've heard that Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc are here today, over on the bank.

(If you're not aware, Starc is married to Australia's wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy).

Beaumont's going nicely, that's another four from the Kent right-hander as she steps back and swipes Jonassen through point.

England have been a lot more positive since Heather Knight came in.

  17. Eng 51-1published at 05:12 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Beaumont 30, Knight 15

That's 50 for England - and 30 for Beaumont - as she pierces the infield with a single to deep cover. Knight - who, like Winfield, has adopted a very high backlift - adds a single.

I don't want to jinx anything, but Beaumont and Knight are two very good players of spin.

  19. Eng 49-1published at 05:09 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

Jess Jonassen has had a change of ends, so it's spin from both ends for now. Beaumont sweeps a single, England are one short of the milestone of 50.

    Knight 14 (18 balls)

There's always a little frisson about a young leg-spinner coming on. While Mason Crane is yet to be thrown the ball in Adelaide today as England's men rotate their four seamers, there's another 20-year-old leggie on show today - Test debutant Amanda-Jade Wellington, on for her first over.

The youngster's a little ragged early on, and Knight shows no mercy, on-driving her for two before cutting and driving a couple of loose deliveries to the point boundary. Two fours in three balls, that's done wonders for England's run rate.
