That ball didn't get up that high, but Tammy Beaumont was in the perfect position to rock onto the back foot and pull it for four. Since Heather Knight has come in, they've been playing their shots more.

    24 overs

McGrath keeps it tight, Beaumont struggles to pierce the ring of off-side fielders, but has better luck on the leg side as she pulls McGrath for her third four.

  3. Eng 34-1published at 04:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Beaumont 24, Knight 4

Knight gets down on one knee and executes a textbook lap-sweep, angling the ball to fine leg for a single. Beaumont rotates the strike, then Knight aims a full-blooded square cut at the spinner, who is indebted to Ellyse Perry for giving chase and flicking the ball back just before it hits the rope.

  4. Eng 30-1published at 04:55 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    McGrath 5-2-9-1

Debutant Tahlia McGrath may not have the profile of opening bowlers Megan Schutt and Ellyse Perry, but she's doing a very good job for her captain here, keeping it tight and not giving England any freebies. Maiden over.

  5. Eng 30-1published at 04:53 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Jonassen 3-1-3-0

Jonassen whistles through a fairly rapid maiden over to Knight. England playing risk-free cricket.

Beaumont guides McGrath through cover point, she doesn't quite time it perfectly which is why it doesn't go for four and is cut off on the boundary as the England pair run three. Captain Knight is off the mark from her first delivery, flicking one off her toes through square leg.

  8. Woakes strikespublished at 04:50 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

Over in Adelaide, England's men have their first wicket - Chris Woakes traps opener Nick Larkin lbw for six. The Cricket Australia XI are 23-1 in reply to England's 293. With no Stuart Broad in this XI, Woakes is taking the new ball with James Anderson, with Craig Overton and Jake Ball still to come.

I was speaking to some of the other commentators off-air and we think Australia may have missed a trick by not having someone in under the helmet at short leg in these early stages.

    Beaumont 20, Knight 0

Captain Heather Knight joins Beaumont at the crease as Jonassen begins a new over to Beaumont, who sweeps a single to short fine leg off the last ball, denying her skipper the strike for now.

    Winfield c Bolton b McGrath 4 (Eng 25-0)

What a catch! Lauren Winfield, having taken more than 50 deliveries to score four runs, chases a wideish delivery from McGrath and Nicole Bolton takes a great one-handed catch diving to her left at short cover. A debut Test wicket for McGrath.

I was expecting to see Lauren Cheatle in this Australia side. I can understand why they've gone with Jess Jonassen ahead of [off-spinner] Ashleigh Gardner as there aren't a lot of left-handers in the England side, and Jonassen has the experience of having played Test cricket. Amanda-Jade Wellington has just scored a century for South Australia Scorpions. In a way, Australia and England have both gone for the safe options.

    Winfield 4, Beaumont 18

With an hour gone, it's time for some spin - slow left-armer Jess Jonassen, player of the match in the last Test at Canterbury in 2015, sends down a tidy first over, with the England openers taking a single apiece.

Drinks breakpublished at 04:32 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Eng 22-0 (16 overs)

Not much swing for young McGrath, a 21-year-old from South Australia, as Beaumont guides her through mid-wicket for the second four of the innings.

Having sent down a pleasing 16 overs in the first hour, the players have earned some drinks. If they keep going like this, they won't need the extra half-hour and we'll be finishing on time at 10:30 GMT.

  18. Eng 18-0published at 04:30 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Winfield 3, Beaumont 13

Better from Beaumont, a solid on-drive brings her two. She has 13 from 42 deliveries - Winfield has three from 48, which Charles Dagnall on TMS thinks is getting into Laura Marsh territory - if you remember the Ashes Test at Wormsley in 2013, Marsh - dubbed the "Great Wall of Kent" - ground her way to 55 from 304 balls. In the same match, Heather Knight made 157 from 338.

    Charles Dagnall
    BBC Test Match Special

I had a little trundle with the pink ball yesterday, just to see how it behaved - I've bowled with white balls and red balls, but never pink. We were here at twilight under the lights, the new pink balls shaped quite nicely. The old one? Nothing.

  20. Eng 15-0published at 04:25 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

First blood to England, you sense, as Ellyse Perry takes a rest after a wicketless six-over spell and gives way to the right-arm medium pace of debutant Tahlia McGrath, who has Bolton in a close catching position at short cover, two pitches adjacent to the one in use.

Winfield immediately looks more attacking than she was against Schutt, aiming a couple of expansive off-drives which go straight to fielders, and when McGrath dribbles one down the leg side, WInfield tries to help it on its way and they run a couple of leg byes.
