There have been a couple of occasions where I think Australia could have counter-punched a little bit more. There's no pleasing us former players!

  2. Aus 402-7published at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2017

    Perry 183, Jonassen 12

Perry late-cuts Jonassen for a couple of twos - having been becalmed somewhat between 100 and 150, she's been revving it up since then.

Australia lead by 121, and the result of this match will likely depend on how ruthless they want to be to win - and secure the Ashes with three T20 games to spare.

  3. Aus 396-7published at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2017

New ball available in four overs

The sun's gone now, we're very much into "night mode" as a low delivery from Elwiss is swatted to deep mid-wicket by Perry. Once again, the field comes up for Jonassen, and goes back for Perry, but there's nothing England can do about it when Perry mercilessly pulls for four. She now has 178 - the fifth highest women's Test score by an Australian.

  4. Aus 388-7published at 08:46 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2017

    Perry 172, Jonassen 9

Marsh shuffles her field, taking the slip out and having most of her fielders saving the single when Jonassen is facing - but Jonassen is a capable striker of the ball, stepping forward to hit the bowler over her head for four. England respond by posting a long-on.

It'll be interesting to see if England take the third new ball when it's available - as it could be easier to hit if Perry and Jonassen go on the attack.

  6. Aus 382-7published at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2017

New ball available in six overs

Jess Jonassen's far from the worst player to be coming in at number nine in Test cricket - she scored 99 in her first Test innings at Canterbury two years ago. Two singles from Elwiss' over.

  7. Aus 380-7published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2017

    Lead by 100

Laura Marsh to bowl. Perry hasn't offered a chance in this great innings of her, and hasn't even really hit the ball in the air - but she goes for a lofted on-drive and it's taken on the bounce as Sophie Ecclestone runs round the boundary - although Mel Jones on TMS thinks the teenager didn't really come in to attack the ball when there may have been the chance of a catch. The Aussies are 100 ahead.

I think the Australian supporters will want to have a crack at England tonight.

  9. Aus 377-7published at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2017

    Perry 168, Jonassen 2

Georgia Elwiss, having taken that wicket just before the interval, will continue with ball in hand. It's business as usual for Ellyse Perry as she pushes a single, while the left-handed Jess Jonassen is off the mark with an on-drive for two. The lead is 97.

The floodlights are on at North Sydney Oval, the sun is setting and the lights will still be in full effect.

Australia will resume on 374-7, a massive 94 runs ahead of England, and with an away win looking unlikely, the conundrum is now this - if England can't bowl Australia out, when will the hosts declare? And after that, can England hold out for a draw to keep the series alive?

Also coaching the CA XI was ex-Australia opener Chris Rogers. He also had a chat with TMS:

"I’d imagine Craig Overton is going to start the first Test. But they’ve got their work cut out. I think Australia are going to have some very clear plans about how to go at their batsmen."

On the absence of Ben Stokes: “It’s huge. It’s not just what he does with the bat and ball, it’s the character he brings. It’s going to be a struggle in finding a like-for-like replacement, but they’ll just have to make do and see how they can fill the gap."

Can England win the Ashes without Stokes? "They’re a very good side and they currently hold the Ashes. You can’t discount them at all. I think it’s going to be a really good series."

Meanwhile, ex-Australia pace bowler Ryan Harris, who played in the 5-0 whitewash over England in 2013-14, was part of the CA XI's coaching team. Here's a couple of snippets from his chat with TMS:

On the England attack: "There’s probably not a lot of pace there. Obviously Broady didn’t play , but if you’ve got Anderson in your team it’s going to be a good attack."

Is England's batting vulnerable? "I think it is absolutely with no Stokes. But it depends on how the boys bowl. We’ve got some good intel and some good knowledge on what we want to do which I’ll pass onto our bowlers."

Who will win the Ashes? “I think Australia will win, but I think it’s going to be really close. But I think we’ll get over the line. We are really difficult to beat in our own conditions, but I think it’s going to be a really good series."

Right, while the players get dinner (and those of us in the UK take our only chance to grab breakfast), TMS will be hearing from some of those involved in the England men's victory over a Cricket Australia XI in Adelaide. We'll give you a little taster...

It's been an unbelievable performance from Ellyse Perry, I don't remember her giving a chance. England look tired, it's been a hard day but they've got to pick themselves up after this 40-minute break. They just want to take some quick wickets and get out there and bat again.

  19. Dinner intervalpublished at 07:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2017

    Aus 374-7 (lead by 94)

Heather Knight to bowl the last over before the interval, the left-handed Jonassen sees it out, and there's huge applause for the Aussies - and in particular Ellyse Perry - as the players walk off.

Yet again, a bad ball gets a wicket - a full-bunger is hit right up in the air and that's Georgia Elwiss' first Test wicket. But in comes the last person England want to see - Jess Jonassen, who scored 99 on her last Test appearance.
