Ex-England seamer on BBC Test Match Special

There might have been questions about the England team selection coming into this Test. They went with the extra batter in Fran Wilson when they maybe could have gone with the extra bowler, but it's all come down to the pitch. You're not going to be able to take 20 wickets on this pitch.

    Knight 65, Elwiss 34

Jonassen gives it plenty of air, but having batted for nearly a session and a half, Knight and Elwiss are largely untroubled. Two singles added to the score.

England take a single to a misfield, then Elwiss is hit on the pad and Wellington appeals... but like every other lbw shout today, the ball was slanting down the leg side.

"On the final day, if both captains... accept that there is no prospect of either side achieving a victory, they may agree to finish the match after (a) the time for the commencement of the last hour has been reached OR (b) there are a minimum of 17 overs to be bowled... "

The last hour is due to start at 09:30 GMT.

    Minimum 24 overs left

Fortune is favouring England with the edges at the moment - Jonassen bowls, Elwiss gets a bottom edge, it's through keeper Alyssa Healy's legs, bounces over the helmet behind her and away for four.

Had it hit the helmet, it would have been five!

On this pitch, you might have had to make it a timeless Test!

Amanda-Jade Wellington produced a moment of magic in the first session today to dismiss Tammy Beaumont for the first time in the match, but Knight is moving up through the gears now - off-driving the spinner for four, while edging a two past the keeper.

Looking a bit chilly at North Sydney now - the coffee stand is doing a good trade.

These players are probably only just learning the nuances of Test cricket now - and they've got to switch back to T20 on Friday.

    Knight 57, Elwiss 28

Jonassen bowls a maiden to Elwiss, who looked like overtaking her skipper at one stage, but is well behind now.

    Scores level

Knight guides Wellington for two - then guides a four through the covers which means England are level.

Should they bowl England out, Australia will have to bat again - so that effectively deducts 10 minutes (for change-of-innings) from the amount of time England have to survive.

Oh, Georgia, no... Georgia Elwiss shoulders arms to an arm ball from Jonassen which drifts towards off stump and comes within a whisker of bowling her! That won't help England fans' blood pressure...

    Eng 162-2

That's 50 for the England skipper - after sweeping Wellington for four, she forces a two through mid-wicket and raises her bat for a half-century from 162 deliveries. She's done exactly what her side needed today.

An important change is made between overs - Nicole Bolton decides she wants a long-sleeved sweater, and Lauren Cheatle brings one on before Amanda-Jade Wellington can begin a new over.

In fact, it's Megan Schutt off the field - so after six overs of pace with the second new ball, Australia turn to Jess Jonassen's left-arm spin. And she serves up a juicy full toss which Georgia Elwiss pummels to the cover boundary for four.

Nearly ready to resume at North Sydney Oval for the last session under the lights.

Theoretically we have a minimum of 31 overs to be bowled in the last two hours, but they could well shake hands on a draw before then.

Ashleigh Gardner is on as a sub fielder - spotter's badge to anyone who can see who's not out there... Mel Jones thinks Elyse Villani could be the absentee.

Is Mitchell Marsh a possible option for Australia at number six?

Less possible than before - and at the moment, not at all, because he's not been bowling. And for me, his batting's still suspect at six in Test cricket.

  19. Bayliss confident Ball will be fitpublished at 08:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

England coach Trevor Bayliss says he is confident injured seamer Jake Ball will be fit for the rest of the tour.

The 26-year-old paceman is likely to miss the final warm-up match in Townsville but Bayliss said "he feels pretty good".

"We want to make sure he is right and available for selection," Bayliss said.
