    Winfield 21, Beaumont 37

Pace bowler Megan Schutt returns to the attack for the first time today - but her first delivery is too short and wide, and Beaumont gives it the treatment, cutting her for four. There's a couple of moral victories for the bowler as she gets Beaumont to play and miss, but there's no swing from a ball which is now 29 overs old.

When you rock up on a day like today, see the footmarks and you've got a leg-spinner in the team, your reaction normally is to bowl them round the wicket, hit the marks and get fielders in under the lid.

Winfield moves to 21, Beaumont drives the wrist-spinner fluently but twice picks out Nicole Bolton at cover. A single to fine leg takes her to 33 from 72 balls - Winfield has 21 from 98.

Australia's line has been good, but their length has been far too full. It's allowed Winfield and Beaumont to get used to the conditions and play themselves in.

Another accurate over from Perry, Elyse Villani gives the ball a good shine between deliveries, but Winfield is equal to anything bowled at her, and also steers a single to mid-off.

When I was playing, the Blackwell twins were always very good at fielding in close under the helmet. Kate always fielded on the leg side.

If you're not aware, vice-captain Alex Blackwell's identical twin sister Kate also played for Australia between 2004 and 2008.

    Winfield 19, Beaumont 32

Beaumont tips-and-runs a quick single to mid-wicket. A third fielding helmet is summoned (the wicketkeeper's helmet makes four) as Elyse Villani comes in at silly point, with Beth Mooney switching to short leg. England are happy to knock the singles around at this stage.

It's almost as though the sides have spent two days figuring out what Test cricket's like and how to play it - and since day three, they've been more comfortable.

England look pretty intact at the moment. Perry's bowling a good length, but sometimes you might get a wicket off a bad length.

There's a fan in the stands dressed as a green-clad superhero - possibly the Incredible Hulk, or maybe just a ninja turtle. Australia's very own superheroine Ellyse Perry sends down her sixth over, and by my reckoning it's the first maiden over of the day as Beaumont is watchful in defence.

I have to say, I rather enjoy the Australian tradition of having a brief bit of music on the radio when there's a change of commentator as Jim Maxwell joins Lisa. There's a smidgen of a chance as Winfield drives Wellington hard and straight at Beth Mooney at silly point, it strikes her on the shin - she'd need to have terrific reflexes to have caught that. And I bet it hurts a little, even with shin pads on.

A long-hop or a juicy full toss for a spinner could buy you a wicket here.

    Winfield 15, Beaumont 31

Perry has taken the slip out, but has two fielders in Winfield's eyeline - the still-helmeted Blackwell at short cover, and another fielder at short mid-on, both of them a couple of pitch widths away from the central track. Just a single added to the score.

Wellington keeps it tight, and as Beaumont sweeps another single, with no short leg in place she's in no danger with that shot. A Winfield single brings up the fifty stand. England untroubled so far.

There are reports that this pitch will be used again for a T20 international on this ground in about a week's time...

Maybe you just let it grow for six days, then play on it.

Blackwell is still helmeted at slip - I'd also like to request a helmet at this point, as there's a chap with a super-length vacuum cleaner, cleaning the top of the overhead lights just above my head... there is also some overnight construction work happening in the BBC Sport studio, it's louder in here than it is at the cricket!

Perry oversteps for another no-ball, but Lauren Winfield is showing a good straight bat to the right-arm seamer.

As they're not used to playing Test cricket, there are options if Wellington were to bowl round the wicket - they won't be used to having to pad up a leg-spinner bowling on or outside leg stump.

  18. Eng 46-0published at 03:42 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    Winfield 13, Beaumont 29

An early change of bowling as Australia throw the ball to debutant leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington. As she's done in the first couple of overs, Beaumont knocks a single, while Winfield finds the gap in the covers and hustles through for a run.

Good to see England's positive approach so far - if anything, as Charles and Lisa point out on TMS, Australia are being a little conservative - having only two close catchers and no-one in close on the leg side, even though they have plenty of runs to play with.

The more Test cricket you play, the more you're going to learn. We've had some great crowds here, imagine if we were going on to play another day-night Test in Adelaide or Melbourne?

It's yesterday's heroine Ellyse Perry to open from the Fig Tree End. (For those of you who keep track of such things, Alex Blackwell is keeping her helmet on, despite being back in an orthodox slip position for the right-arm pace bowler).

If we need proof that Perry is human rather than superhuman... she bowls a no-ball. Meanwhile, Beaumont whips a full toss down to long leg for two. There's a stifled lbw appeal as Lauren Winfield is hit on the boot, but her foot was already outside the line of leg stump on impact, so the ball was clearly slanting down the leg side.
