Well I don't think that exact mode of dismissal was part of the plan.
Warner looks just as stunned as the home Gabba crowd as he strides off.

That's an extraordinary shot. It came out of nowhere. It was a nothing ball and he's just clipped it straight to short mid-wicket.
Warner c Malan b Ball 26 (Aus 59-3)
Out of nowhere!
I was literally typing how nothing had worked for England since the second wicket when David Warner contrives to clip a rather innocuous delivery from Jake Ball straight to Dawid Malan at short mid-wicket.
A bizarre shot and a huge bonus for the tourists.

You give Warner room, he can free his arms. I wouldn't bowl that way at him, that's all I'm saying. It's not my way.
50 up for Australia as Moeen drops a tad too short and wide, allowing Warner to deftly cut it away to the fence.
Good rotation as Warner picks up a single and Smith scrambles three to finish the over.

Paul Cleaver: I can safely say that I’m the only person on the 5am train from Craiova to Bucharest that has any awareness of a cricket match going on right now
Ball oversteps to concede a no ball before a decent-looking drive for one by Warner.
Not much for Ball until the fifth delivery as he angles one back in and it whistles past off stump - Smith happy to leave it though, he knows where his off peg is.
A comfortable defence to finish.
Right, Jake Ball is into the attack for the first time in the Ashes.
He's not bowled much on the tour so far after turning his ankle in that practice match.
Can he nip one of these two out?

Barmies being properly heard for the first time in the series. "We are the Army, the Barmy Army, and we are mental, we are mad. We are the loyalest cricket supporters that the wooorrrrlllllddd has ever had." Repeat. Cracking atmos.
Stuart Broad is even conducting the orchestra, asking for more noise.
Warner knocks it through mid-on for one and then Moeen drops too short and Smith can pull away for three.
Another single for Warner and Smith plays out the over.

I would try something different to Smith. I'd bowl fairly straight - to his strength - but I'd pack the on side. He looks, and I hate to say it, a bit ugly duckling. He's not an aesthetic player but he's a very effective player.
Woakes tidy enough but Smith easily able to leave everything on line. That's fine but Woakes has to be disciplined to keep it there and not drift into Smith's pads and allow him an easy scoring shot.
He is for now - five dot balls to Smith after a single to Warner off the first delivery.

Warner and Smith are so much better than the rest of the Australia line-up that either of their wickets are worth two.
Warner 15, Smith 9
Moeen to Smith - plenty of ooh and ahs from Bairstow behind the stumps but no real venom to the right-hander thus far.
The Aussie captain flicks away a single before Warner does the same off the final ball.

I used to think Michael Slater had all these idiosyncrasies when he was batting, but Steve Smith has him well and truly covered.
Steve Smith is obviously a tremendous batsman. But my days he's stressful to watch, taking a huge step from leg stump to off and moving all the time.
I may never fully understand how he's made this technique effective, but it sure has been over the past few years. England need to get the home skipper early.
For now he works Woakes away throught mid-wicket for two before jogging through for a single.
Moeen 3-1-6-1
Maiden for Moeen as Warner can't work him away.
Nifty bit of footwork from umpire Aleem Dar to flick the ball up for Moeen too.

Andy Bracegirdle: Bold prediction I made yesterday. Moeen Ali will take more wickets this series with a lower average than Nathan Lyon!
Ed Woodley: This plan to keep Warner off strike with easy singles and attacking the other batsman! Working a treat!
Warner 14, Smith 5
Yeesh, Steve Smith is not lacking in confidence nor touch as he just whips one off his toes through wide mid-on and it rollicks away to the fence.
A few leaves follow, Smith displaying his trademark fidgety style.
Khawaja has struggled against spin in the past so a crafty bit of captaincy from Joe Root if that's part of the reason he got Moeen Ali on early.
Steadying ship time for Australia's linchpins Warner and Smith.
