  1. Aus 93-2published at 36.3 overs

One thing England and Joe Root will hope is that this little tussle gets Stuart Broad's legs going. They need one of those magic spells. Khawaja pulls for one. That brings Smith back on strike to Broad again.

    Ding, ding. Round two!

The Broad-Smith conversation is still going on as the Australian now faces up to Chris Woakes. This is a clear plan from England. They are having a go, trying to unsettle him.

Ooooh. It almost works. Woakes finds Smith's edge but the ball goes down and bounces before the slips.

This has perked the crowd up.

  4. Aus 92-2published at 35 overs

    Khawaja 27, Smith 5

Crikey. England have three slips and two short mid-ons to Smith. Jimmy Anderson with his left foot almost on the cut strip and Mark Stoneman a couple of yards to his right.

Broad is having a chirp to the Aussie captain. England are going at Steve Smith here. Four balls in a row Broad follows through right up to Smith and has a word. Smith gets his reply in.

This is getting tasty. Umpire Aleem Dar looks as though he wants to step in.

The view from the back of the grass bank, underneath the scoreboard. The combination of damp grass and beer makes it smell like a music festival.

  6. Aus 90-2published at 34 overs

    Khawaja 26, Smith 4

David Warner whacked his pad with his bat after nicking the ball behind. He knew he had given his wicket away with a poor shot.

Joe Root has brought Stuart Broad back into the attack for the start of Steve Smith's innings. They went through five different plans to Smith last match. Which will they go for today?

  7. What have you missed?published at 07:37 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Just waking up? Or a very, very late night?

You missed England captain Joe Root winning the toss... and choosing to bowl.

Although Chris Woakes ran out Cameron Bancroft for 10, the wisdom of Root's decision was being questioned every more loudly as David Warner closed in on a half-century.

However, Woakes had Warner caught behind for 47 to give an England bowler their first wicket after 33 overs of the match. And boy, did they need it.

Because of the 90-minute rain delay earlier, play can continue until 12:00 GMT. Get comfortable...

David Warner's 47 came from 102 balls, with five fours. It's his second slowest innings of over 40.

  9. Aus 90-2published at 34 overs

    Khawaja 26, Smith 4

Crunch. Half-volley from Chris Woakes to Steve Smith and the Aussie skipper drives through the covers for four. A beautiful way to start an innings. Not what Joe Root wants to see from second slip.

  10. Aus 86-2published at 33.1 overs

This is a key passage then for all of you just waking up. Out strides Steve Smith, the Australia captain and first-Test centurion. England MUST get him early.

That's a poor shot, but my word, England needed that. Warner was really feeling for that. It was a get out shot, as Geoffrey would say. He is furious.

    Big!

Just as we all started to really worry Chris Woakes makes the breakthrough. In all honesty Woakes hasn't done that much with the delivery. It's just a poor waft from David Warner. The ball bounced a little but it was just too close to cut.

Warner has handed his wicket to England and you can see in the celebrations of Joe Root's side that they know that was key.

  13. Aus 86-1published at 33 overs

What can England do to create some opportunities? Moeen Ali bowls a tight over, going for just one run, but it's not particularly threatening. Usman Khawaja is starting to look more comfortable to the off spin.

The Australian tactic is to see Anderson and Broad off, play low-risk cricket shots. When Woakes, Overton and Moeen off, there will be more scoring opportunities. When you see the opposition are doing that, England have to attack and take risks with Anderson and Broad.

The decision to bat first seems a strange one to me, especially when the stats show that the Adelaide Oval is second on the list of highest average first innings runs in world cricket. It's one of the best batting wickets in the world. Go figure.

Michael Vaughan is starting to get that worried feeling and I must say it's starting grow on me too. The run out remains the only breakthrough for England. Warner is looking dangerous.

    Drinks - Aus 85-1published at 32 overs

    Warner 46, Khawaja 26

Those two boundaries from Warner off Overton in the previous over have persuaded Joe Root to make a change. Back comes Chris Woakes for his first bowl after the rain delay. The conditions don't seem as favourable for seam bowling now. It's brightening up and Woakes doesn't look too threatening. England aren't getting the pink ball to move off the straight.

    That's drinks.
