My heart sank when Joe Root said bowl because you have that feeling of Nasser Hussain in Brisbane, but it wasn't a surprise that they did. They need to bowl better.

The players are due out in 10 minutes, with Australia 138-2 after 51 overs of this rain-interrupted day.

Usman Khawaja, who was dropped on 44 by Mark Stoneman at deep backward square leg, is unbeaten on 53, while captain Steve Smith - of the brilliant 141 in the first Test - has sneaked his way to 25.

Good to see some aggression even if verbal. But when you have got peashooters and they have cannons your batsmen better be ready for the counter-barrage. Not sure ours are?

The grass bank takes up most of the Cathedral End as is split into two halves. On one side, underneath the scoreboard, beer-fuelled rowdiness. On the other, families and picnic blankets, like a Sunday afternoon in the park. One group was prepared enough to bring cold cuts and cheese.

  7. Australia v England... againpublished at 08:54

Want more Australia-England rivalry? The Rugby League World Cup final is about to get under way in Brisbane, where you can expect more than a few harmless verbals from Stuart Broad.

You can watch it live and follow live text commentary right here.

Ta, Matt. Play will resume in just under 30 minutes, and will go on until midday.

England have got themselves in a bit of a pickle here. They've not bowled that badly but they've not been that good, either. Here's a look at the bowling figures:

    • Anderson: 13-1-29-0
    • Broad: 11-4-18-0
    • Woakes: 9-2-35-1
    • Overton: 10-2-32-0
    • Moeen: 8-1-21-0

Hmmmmm. Obviously this was not the plan when Joe Root put Australia into bat this morning.

How many wickets do you think England need in the final session to satisfy those criticising his decision?

I'm going to say four? At least? Even then, if Australia close six wickets down they'll still be fairly happy, won't they?

While you ponder that I'm off to rest my fingers. Amy Lofthouse is back.

  10. What have you missed?published at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

If you've just woken up, you didn't set your alarm wrong - rain has slightly thrown things out of shape.

Joe Root called correctly at the toss and opted to bowl first, but England were wasteful with the new ball before a 90-minute rain delay held up proceedings.

Chris Woakes made the breakthrough after tea as he came flying in at mid-off to run out Cameron Bancroft for 10 and get England's dander up.

David Warner, helped by Usman Khawaja, steadied Australia before Warner offered England a sniff of a chance as he edged Woakes behind for 47.

Steve Smith was unsettled by a barrage of verbals but he's still there on 25, while Khawaja, after being dropped on 44 by Mark Stoneman, has registered his fifth Test half-century.

The bowling was pretty ordinary in the first spell. It was disappointing and I'd imagine Root, more than anyone, was pretty furious. They came back after the rain more energised.

  12. Tea - Aus 138-2published at 51 overs

    Khawaja 53, Smith 25

Very, very short from Craig Overton and Khawaja isn't interested. Mark Stoneman's tea isn't going to taste very nice today. If you're just joining us, the opener dropped Khawaja at deep backward square leg, a relatively straight forward catch when the left-hander was on 44.

That's the end of the session. A session that undoubtedly the hosts have had the better of. England bowled much better than in the first session but still just the two wickets and Steve Smith is 'in' once again.

I like it, Julian. But who would play the Simon Cowell judging role? Got to be Bob Willis, right? That stare could scare off any young prospect.

This is definitely the period when England are lacking some serious pace to rough up the batsman. Or, dare I say it, a Mr Stokes to 'make something happen'?

Another over from Moeen and just a single from it. Khawaja keeps the strike. There'll be one more over before the break.

Why can't we find/develop a left-arm quick who can bowl at 90mph? Maybe if we had a televised national search show like an X-Factor for cricket?

  15. Aus 137-2published at 49 overs

    Overton

Yep. Steve Smith has his eye on his lunch/dinner/tea. I'm all confused at what this next interval is. The Australian captain just blocks out the over from Overton and isn't interested in a couple of half volleys served up by the England bowler.

  16. Aus 137-2published at 48 overs

The Adelaide hum is back as the Aussies dig in before the interval. There's a bit of spin for Moeen but not sharp spin. Neither batsman is really in any trouble. It seems England are going to need a big effort in the darkness this evening.

  17. Aus 135-2published at 47 overs

    Khawaja 51, Smith 24

A change of ends for Craig Overton. Just how has Steve Smith got 23 to his name already? A few drives aside he's looked all at sea.

There's another to the total followed by another single for Khawaja. Root has his arms folded at slip and applauds the gangly Overton as he pitches one right up to Smith. This partnership is now worth 49.

  18. How's stat?!published at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Andrew Samson

Usman Khawaja's half-century came from 89 balls in 126 minutes. It's his second Test fifty against England. He previously averaged 20 from nine innings.

  19. 50 runs

50 for Khawajapublished at 46 overs

    Khawaja 50, Smith 23

We have 15 minutes to go until the 40 minute 'dinner break'. The ground is almost fully in shade now as the night hours of this day-night Test draw closer. England would love to nip one out now.

Moeen is bowling from round the wicket but that's too short. Simple for Khawaja and he chops a cut behind square for four, despite the desperate dive of Overton.

He's given England one pretty simple chance which they dropped but that is a decent knock.

I think Smith might look to play a few shots against Moeen but Khawaja didn't particularly look at home against him.
