John Wallace-Howell: The fault is the toss. We don't bowl well in Aus & we've bowled too short for years. We needed scoreboard pressure of a good first innings to help our weaker bowling attack. Root gambled on the challenge of the night session with a new ball that weather stopped.

Moeen is ineffective with the ball. Australia have a spinner in Nathan Lyon who gets wickets, creates pressure and looks troublesome to the batsmen. You need a spinner of quality.

Nathan Lyon took six wickets in this match. All of them were England's left-handers. He has 11 wickets in the series, the second most behind Mitchell Starc's 14.

More from Trevor Bayliss: "Every one of our players over those two matches, and especially this match, has showed they can play the game.

"They’ve been in the game and competed very well. We’ve got to work out, individually I think, how we can do that for a lot longer.

"Joe Root, whenever he scores runs now, he leads from the front. But the same thing again – we haven’t scored a hundred in this series yet. We need guys to go on and make big hundreds."

If you went to bed last night hoping for news of a miraculous victory for England then, er, sorry. Australia have gone 2-0 up after England were bowled out for 233.

An excellent spell by Josh Hazlewood saw Chris Woakes fall to the second ball of the day, before Joe Root edged behind in his next over.

Moeen Ali and Craig Overton fell to Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc respectively and, despite some resistance from Jonny Bairstow, the defeat seemed only a matter of time.

Bairstow was last man out for 36 as Starc ended with 5-88, Hazlewood took 2-49 and, crucially, Australia take another leap closer to regaining the Ashes.

Arran Peters: Opening stands are hard to come by. When the first wicket goes it means 3-4 are just round the corner. Starts are not converted by big name players. Concentration skills are poor. 6-10 can be cleaned up in no time even with a tail wag. England's batting in short.

  8. Cook form a worry?published at 07:57 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

Ben (see below) wants to talk about Alastair Cook's place in the team so let's do it.

His scores in this series are two, seven, 37, 16. In this match he got two starts but failed to go on and was dismissed twice by Nathan Lyon.

This year the former skipper averages 37.29 in 17 innings but that is greatly helped by his double hundred against the West Indies in August. That innings is the only time he has reached three figures in 2017 in Tests.

Another than that century he made 88 against South Africa at the Oval but has only passed 50 one more time in 2017 which was in the first Test of the year.

    2. First-innings bowling

Some will argue that the fault for England's defeat in this match does not lie with Joe Root's decision to bowl first but with the performance their bowlers put in shortly afterwards.

In the first hour on day one Australia were able to merrily make their way to 33-0 before the rain came with little threat as England's bowlers bowled too short.

If England had pitched the ball up like they did in the second innings would they have made early inroads into the Australia line-up and in turn bowled them out for a smaller total?

Get in touch if you think that's where the fault lies...

Trevor Bayliss on England's position in the series: "We’ve got to take the positives out of it. As I said, there was a number of good things. We’ve just got to do it for longer.

"We have got a few scars there with the Australian team. There’ll be a few who have missed out and a few who will be nervous. They’ve got four good bowlers and we’ve shown we can compete with them for a period of time. We’ve just got to do it for longer."

England had a chance, but in the big moments, Australia are better than us. They have a better bowling attack- they have a four man, quality bowling attack, all of whom can get wickets. We don’t- we rely on two bowlers. In Test match cricket, everybody says you need 20 wickets to win, and that is quite true, but if you don’t get enough runs, you’re never in the game to win.

    1. The toss

It seems an awful long time ago but remember back on Saturday morning when Joe Root won the toss under cloudy skies and elected to bowl?

Were England doomed from that point? Should Root have sent his team out to bat and hope for a big first innings score on the board? Interestingly Root said he did not regret the decision when he was interviewed post match. He said he backed his bowlers to take 10 wickets in those conditions.

In the end Australia managed to rack up 442-8 declared in their first innings.

  15. 'We have to make more runs'published at 07:36 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

England coach Trevor Bayliss, speaking to Test Match Special: "It was a disappointing end to it this morning but I thought we played well in those last couple of days to actually give ourselves a chance.

"We’ve got to work out how we can keep that level of concentration and level of play for more than just one or two days.

"We’ve probably bowled better at different times [than on first day]. I think at different times we’ve bowled worse than we did and picked up more wickets. That’s just the way it goes.

"The main thing for us is that we have to make more than 220 runs in an innings. If we do that well we can put more pressure on Australia than we did on this match."

Good morning to everyone just waking up. There's no easy way to say this. England are 2-0 down in the Ashes after losing in Adelaide by 120 runs.

England were bowled out for 233 in an hour and 45 minutes, with Mitchell Starc taking 5-88.

Chris Woakes was caught behind off Josh Hazlewood from the second delivery of the day, before Joe Root fell in a similar fashion in next over.

Moeen was trapped in front as he tried to sweep Nathan Lyon before Craig Overton, who took a nasty blow to the ribs early in his innings, was bowled by a superb Starc delivery.

Jonny Bairstow offered some resistance but, after Stuart Broad edged behind, he was bowled to become Starc's fifth and final scalp.

  19. Batting the biggest concern - Baylisspublished at 07:28 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

England coach Trevor Bayliss was in no doubt where his biggest concerns lie in the team.

He said it was "certainly" with the batting.

"All of our players have competed at different times and have showed they can bat," Bayliss said.

"They have got to do it for longer and have to find a way to keep concentration."

Again I'd love your thoughts. I'd say it's hard to argue with him.
