Josh Hazlewood bends his back, the bounce is so steep that Tim Paine has to go full length/height to get a hand on it.

He was a left-field pick but Paine has kept wicket well today. The Barmy Army are finding their voice as the beers start to kick in. Moeen Ali and Paul Collingwood share a laugh up above.

I still reckon Collingwood will be batting at five before England come home...

SDyer: Without his team-mates there to advise, Steve Smith would review a restaurant he's never been to.

A new angle of the Mark Stoneman dismissal suggests that the right decision was arrived at in the end, he did glove it behind. It was a snorter from Mitchell Starc.

What a shot that is, bit of footwork from Jonny Bairstow to open up some space and kiss Nathan Lyon to the fence. Lovely shot.

He then coughs up a very, very tough caught-and-bowled chance, Lyon flies to his left but he can't get there.

That would have been the fifth wicket if that ball had hit the stumps.

  11. Eng 155-4published at 43.4 overs

Credit where it's due, Australia's bowling has been fearsome today. Josh Hazlewood, probably the pick of the bunch, is warming up to come back into the attack.

Jonny Bairstow tickles one behind, off the thigh pad though. Steve Smith wants to review that but Tim Paine stands his ground. Bairstow then takes on a quick single and Dawid Malan is nearly run out by David Warner...

Woke at 3:30 with tea in my Leeds hotel. Wish I hadn’t bothered - more ineptitude from the openers. We can’t blame the Stoneman decision on our position.

Aren't we all glad Steph is having such a nice time on his holidays out there? Perhaps he can do a review of the bars at the Waca next?

England survive a Nathan Lyon over easily enough.

I was a fan of the grass banks at Adelaide, but they are trumped by the Waca. Close to the action, everyone sitting down, plenty of room, a gradient steep enough to get comfortable.

Nathan Lyon is on - at least that means no bouncers for Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow...

  18. What you've missed...published at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

If you're just reaching for your early morning coffee or bundling on layers for the morning commute, then let me fill you in on what you've missed.

This game has been rattling along in highly entertaining fashion after England won the toss and opted to bat first.

Alastair Cook was trapped lbw by Mitch Starc while James Vince edged Josh Hazlewood behind just before lunch, but Mark Stoneman played some lovely strokes in between.

Stoneman weathered a real storm after lunch. His helmet was broken after being struck by a Hazlewood bouncer, and he was dropped twice on 52 before he lost his batting partner as Joe Root edged behind.

Stoneman was then given out caught behind on review - a controversial decision, given there seemed to be no real obvious evidence that Stoneman had got a nick on the ball.

Sam Edwards: I had a dream last night that James Anderson and Craig Overton both hit 100s in a record-breaking 10th wicket stand. We might need that to come true.

Joseph Harmer: The best thing about wobbly English batting is the fact you'll see ways of getting out that will never be seen on a cricket pitch again

    Malan 32, Bairstow 4

There are 40 minutes of play left in the session. England are going to have to earn every single run.

They are scoring at nearly four an over though. If you do connect with one of these missiles it generally goes for four.
