    Malan 12, Stoneman 56

Nice from Mark Stoneman, jabbing down sharply onto the latest Mitchell Starc rocket. Have these two batsmen ridden out the storm? There's nothing too sharp in that over.

    Famous last words?

England on the verge already. They are just not close to good enough batting wise. Root and Cook are both having a poor series with the willow. Toast!

    Cummins 1-35

This is a real Test now. Mark Stoneman has been through the wringer since lunch, dropped twice, smacked in the face but still in. Just about.

Dawid Malan looks as comfortable as a penguin in a microwave, to quote the late, great Sid Waddell.

I had tickets for this, 5 days of sunshine, beers, walks to the beach from my house after the days play, but instead I’m lying in bed at 5am waiting for the central heating to kick in here in London so I can get up and make a cuppa! I hope my family appreciates the sacrifice I’ve made!

The latest installment of Stokes-watch for you...

The most talked-about all-rounder in world cricket scored 93 off 47 balls for Canterbury Kings in New Zealand's domestic Twenty20 competition.

He struck six fours and seven fours and also took 1-17 in a 134-run win over Otago Volts in the Super Smash in Christchurch.

Stokes had scored only 36 runs in his first three 50-over games for Canterbury, where he playing while unavailable for England selection.

84 of England's 130 runs have come through boundaries. There have also been two byes that went for four.

  9. Eng 130-3published at 36 overs

    Malan 11, Stoneman 56

England survive another over, Dawid Malan picking up a welcome four as Mitchell Starc spears one across too far. Malan then flashes through the slips - there's no third slip so he picks up another four.

After almost every delivery, the speed flashes up on the big screen, accompanied by the smiling face of an Aussie quick. There isn't much under 90mph. I fear for England's tail.

  11. Eng 122-3published at 35.3 overs

Chance - didn't carry! Dawid Malan this time uncomfortable against this short-pitched barrage, fending a Mitchell Starc bouncer just short of Cameron Bancroft at short leg.

England can't get anything away. In a vice.

This is a bit like having a boxer on the ropes, and you can't deliver the knockout blow.

  14. Eng 122-3published at 35.1 overs

The good news for Mark Stoneman: Josh Hazlewood is out of the attack.

The bad news: Mitchell Starc is on.

  15. Eng 122-3published at 35 overs

    Malan 3, Stoneman 56

Pat Cummins is inspired by Josh Hazlewood's fine spell at the other end. He cuts Dawid Malan in half with a good bouncer and then nearly bowls him leg stump.

Runs look very, very hard to come by at the moment. They go up for another caught down the leg side but that's come off his hip I think.

Malan then gets off the mark, good shot.

If England want to win a Test match at all in this series, as much as cricket is a team sport, an individual has to step up and convert a pretty start into an innings defining 130+. The fact we’re still going on about Vince’s 83 highlights how much we’re yearning for that hundred. Stokes hit our first one four years ago at Perth so come on new boys, pull your finger out.

This is now Mark Stoneman's highest Test score, surpassing the 53 he made at the Gabba in the first Test.

Mark Stoneman is going to have to start doing something to those shorter balls because he's a bit of a punchbag at the moment. It's really, really good bowling.

  20. Eng 119-3published at 34 overs

    Malan 0, Stoneman 56

Mark Stoneman's head is presumably still ringing, but he is the senior partner now. Australia's quicks are on top form.

Stoneman plays a nice defensive push to another good ball and it ends up sliding to the fence for four. He then gets more chin music from Josh Hazlewood, wearing one on the neck.

Plenty of chat too from the big bowler, who is steaming in and past the outside edge again. When he bangs it in short he is hitting the batsmen, when he pitches it up he's seaming past the edge.
