Sam Rogers‏: Mitch Marsh has been a great selection for England so far! Hopefully Stoneman can capitalise and kick on for a career best.

Stoneman's weight was so far back when he played that drive. He must be expecting the short ball. It was like Alastair Cook's dismissal. Their weight is back and that was a real loose drive from Stoneman.

Not only did Mitch Marsh drop that catch, the ball hit him in the face too.

Bad times all round for the Aussies.

    Can Mark Stoneman capitalise?

That really should have been taken. He went the Australian way - with his fingers pointing up - and it just swung on him a bit.

England on Nelson, David Shepherd will be twitching somewhere no doubt. And that's why!

Dropped by Mitch Marsh, Mark Stoneman gets a huge let-off.

He wafts at a wide ball from Josh Hazlewood, that's a sitter at first slip. Got to catch that!

Readying my post bag for a busy day delivering untold amount of Christmas cards. Hoping Stoneman and Root will still be there by the time I start my round!

  9. Eng 111-2published at 29 overs

England's batsmen have come out keen to keep the tempo up, it seems. Joe Root plays a prod off Pat Cummins for a well-run two.

Root has scored a fifty in each losing Test so far. England need more this time around though, and that's a lovely shot as Cummins strays leg side, dispatched to the fence.

Root averages 62 in first innings and 41 in the second innings. And that's another four, cut late beautifully. Stylish.

England will be looking for Mark Stoneman to go on but, in the absence of any form whatsoever from Alastair Cook, it's important he shows some form with the bat.

Thomas Measures: Fifties won’t win us Test matches, Stoneman needs to get a ton and make it big.

It's a curious thing, the Waca. It's like a lot of things in Perth - it's new, but falling down. For those of you who've never been, Perth's a bit like a hot Croydon.

  14. 50 runs

50 for Stonemanpublished at 28 overs

    Root 6, Stoneman 52

Joe Root is sporting a neat square of what looks like a teatowel around his waist. Been doing the dishes at lunch? May be a bit sweaty now in the Perth sun.

Runs first ball! Slightly streaky but he puts Josh Hazlewood to the fence with an uppish, thickish outside edge. Skipper then plays a neat shot through midwicket for a single.

Mark Stoneman, chasing the two he needs for 50, wafts at a cut shot and misses out. Encouragement to the cordon.

And then he does put the ball away for a four. Well played that man! 50 up, and England's ton up too.

Here they come! Joe Root and Mark Stoneman stride out to the middle. Forget about Niall's toast lads and crack on from here...

Thomas Tew: Stoneman batting well, Cook out early, Vince caught behind after getting a start. Nice to see nothing's changed for this Test!

    What's a good score then?

Four years ago Australia won the toss and had a bat and ended the day on 326/6. I would think England would take that now if offered wouldn't they?

Had 2 teeth pulled out at the hospital yesterday so woke up to top up on pain meds... thought I’d take a peep at the score and now given up on sleep. Just hope the teeth is the most pain I’ll face this weekend! Great start England!

Notoriously publicity shy Ben Stokes - heard of him? - is in the news again this morning.

Nothing like that - he's playing for Canterbury and smashed 93 off 47 balls, including seven sixes.

    Wooosh!

It's the mystery which is sweeping the nation.

    WHAT'S ON NIALL'S TOAST?

Re - toast, looks like garlic and herb cheese spread to me (maybe la roule) it's making me want some though.

    Venky in Durham

Just woken up for my baby to be fed, check score, no comment on cricket however I think Niall has put cream cheese in his toast. Toast mystery solved, the mystery about how England will win the ashes remains unsolved.
