Warner and Bancroft exchange singles before Moeen drops short with the final delivery and Warner duly thwacks it away to the fence for four.
Hmm.

Pat O'Hara: I can understand the calls for Broad to be dropped but go about it the right way. He’s won us the Ashes in 09 13 and 15 with his bowling. We have no respect for our pros in this country. The Aussies wouldn’t be doing that to one of their own.
Here comes Moeen Ali for his first bowl of the Test, replacing Stuart Broad...
Woakes seems to be in competition with himself for who can bowl the worst delivery you could bowl to Warner - another short and wide one sees the Aussie cut away for a couple.
Warner punches away for one. A strangled appeal for lbw as Woakes gets one into the top of Bancroft's pads. Going miles over though.

The odd ball has seamed an inch or two and might see it reverse later but I can't see much happening. This has got a feeling of being a long day for the England side.
There are a lot of people inside the MCG today...
Broad. Bancroft. Bouncer. This time the Aussie opener ducks under the short one.
Two front foot defences follow before Bancroft ducks under another bumper.
Broad hangs a couple just outside off but Bancroft plays them away. A maiden.

This wide tactic is what you would want England to go to if Warner was on 60 or 70. It is bowling for one mode of dismissal - the big slash.
It is a bit early for dry bowling.
Short and wide from Woakes and Warner swipes it away for a couple.
Shorter and wider from Woakes and Warner bangs it away to the covers, with Curran running round to collect, but not before Australia add another two to the total.
Not a very convincing start from Woakes, that.

The frustrations, simplicity and decisions of cricket illustrated in two deliveries. When England didn't have a short leg, Bancroft was trying to stand up and play any short delivery, getting himself in a tangle. When the bat-pad went in, he just ducked under the next bouncer, easy as you like.
First bowling change of the day as Chris Woakes comes on to replace James Anderson.

English cricket has become so safe and comfortable in recent years.
If you get into the team and are a senior player then it is very difficult to lose your place.
I am staggered England are not playing Mason Crane.
Bancroft 7, Warner 26
England are already down to two slips - but Alastair Cook at first slip is almost in the game as Bancroft edges Broad, but the ball falls well short.
Bancroft jumpy against the short ball yet again, fending it up in the air but short of Broad on his follow through.
The bouncer is bringing out some ropey batting from Bancroft and finally a short leg is brought in.
That's full and straight though and Bancroft flicks it away through mid-wicket for two, his first runs for a while.
Warner relieves a period of pressure with a clattering drive through the covers for four. It was wide from Anderson and Warner lashed his hands at it with glee.
Better from Anderson to end the over, not giving any room outside off.

Broad 5-2-11-0
Here's the first run for 4.5 overs as Warner flicks it away square for one.
So Broad gets to have a go at Bancroft. The first is fended away on the back foot.
A shortish one is again not dealt with brilliantly by Bancroft as he just about works it round the corner - no short leg in place though.
Another dot to finish.

With England so far in the series it is as if they are conning themselves into thinking it has been alright.
I personally would have made changes this week and ruffled a few feathers.
And if they're not making changes then change tactics. Why not give Chris Woakes the new ball? Why does it have to be James Anderson and Stuart Broad?
