  1. Aus 26-0published at 00:07 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

Anderson reckons Bancroft might not be up to much against the short ball - again the Lancashire man goes short and again the Aussie opener doesn't play it very convincingly, this one glancing away off the bat handle.

Anderson probes away but Bancroft is able to defend on the front foot as he plays out a fourth straight maiden.

Gareth Evans: This is already looking extremely ominous for England.

Douglas: Jimmy looks as if he’s rolling his arm over... 82mph.

Ben Watkin: Still waiting for something, anything, from Stuart Broad to justify him still being selected.

  3. Aus 26-0published at 8 overs

Good again from Broad, who's not giving Warner anything.

The Aussie opener tries to scamper a single off the last but decent fielding sees him wisely retreat to his crease.

A third maiden. Pressure after Warner's early fluency. Can Anderson took advantage next up?

Tom Curran is the fourth England player to make his debut on Boxing Day.

Phil Tufnell, Warren Hegg and Alex Hales are the others.

  5. Aus 26-0published at 7 overs

James Anderson surprises Cameron Bancroft with a short one that the Aussie opener doesn't play well at all - the ball looping up off the glove but falling nowhere near the slips and away from the stumps.

Another testing bumper than Bancroft ducks under this time. Another tight over and another maiden for England.

  6. Aus 26-0published at 6 overs

Hello! Broad goes round the wicket at Warner and gets one to nibble away off the seam and past the outside edge. Genuine play and miss that.

Tight lines from Broad as he doesn't offer Warner any scoring opportunities. A maiden and a bit of early promise.

Tom Kirman: Why take Crane on a tour to Aus with the main Test team and not play him. What’s he gaining? Be more beneficial to play for the Lions if that’s the case.

RunningJay: I couldn't agree more with the comments the Ashes have gone, Crane and Wood should have been given a go.

Jay Barnes: There's no need for all the doom and gloom. Some quick, after party, back of the envelope calculations make it clear that we're in for a Root double century, a Cook triple ton and a king pair for Smith

  8. Aus 26-0published at 5 overs

Shot! Anderson strays too full and Warner tucks into it, a lovely push-drive just wide of mid-off and to the fence.

A single takes Warner through to 21 off just 18 balls already. Eek.

It's the fourth over of the day and England have a deep point and a deep square leg for David Warner. I know they think if they restrict his boundaries, he might make a mistake, but it does seem a little bit like waving a white flag.

  10. Aus 19-0published at 4 overs

    Bancroft 5, Warner 14

First boundary of the day as David Warner just pushes at one from Stuart Broad and it races away down the ground to the fence.

Huge square boundaries but very short straight ones at the MCG.

Warner flicks into leg for two before another drive allows him to sprint a single.

England already have a deep point to Warner. Discuss.

It is rocket hot out there. The wicket looks flat. In 2010-11 we won the toss, it was cloudy and we bowled in the best day of cricket I was a part of.

I hope England can emulate that today but I don't think these are the conditions to match that.

  12. Aus 10-0published at 23:42

Warner scampers another single before Bancroft tucks one off his pads for a couple.

Tidy enough from Anderson but no early swing so far.

Ooh, nice shape on one that comes back in to Bancroft a tad. A leave to finish.

Tom Wrathmell: Super excited that Tom Curran makes his debut today as he's a big talent! Should have been bold with Crane too as Moeen has had a poor tour. Really hoping the boys can keep the MCG quiet today!

Tom Winter: Why would England not give Crane a go? We need to change it up and with Moeen and Broad so out of form surely it would have been worth dropping one of them.

Tim Griffiths: Good luck Tom Curran but can't see another 80mph seamer who bats a bit changing England's fortunes.

  14. Aus 7-0published at 2 overs

Broad starts with a couple of dot balls before Warner leans on a drive and scurries through for one.

Nothing doing for Bancroft, who plays out the rest of the over.

A colleague on the cricket desk has promised himself a piece of marzipan every time a wicket falls - if he's feeling sick at tea then England have had a very good day.

I couldn't agree less with what England have done with the selection. Mark Wood is in the wings and pace has obviously been the major weapon.

Moeen Ali should not be picked on merit at the moment in my view.

I would have loved to have seen Mason Crane and Mark Wood play but England have gone for the conservative option as ever.

Stuart Broad will open up with Anderson.

David Warner had only faced one delivery when commentators on Australian TV were talking about him scoring a hundred.

  18. Aus 6-0published at 1 over

    Bancroft 3, Warner 3

The second ball is a touch wider and Bancroft guides it with an angled bat out through the covers and scampers three.

David Warner cuts away and also picks up three - could see plenty of those thanks to the MCG's vast outfield square of the wicket.

Bancroft defends the final ball of the over.

  19. Aus 0-0published at 0.1 overs

    Here is Anderson to Bancroft...

It's well outside the off stump and the Aussie opener watches it through to Jonny Bairstow.
