  1. Eng 100-3published at 04:10 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

Lyon, fresh from that sprint back to celebrate, has another left-hander to target and gets one to sharply bite past the outside edge of Malan's bat.

Runs elsewhere for Malan, a square drive and a backward cut for two each. That's 100 up for England. It's the three down they'll be livid with.

Nathan Lyon didn't think Cook was out. He'd pulled away from Australia's huddle and was wandering back to his fielding position at point. When the decision was shown on the big screen, Lyon had to sprint back to his team-mates for a cuddle.

  3. Eng 96-3published at 33 overs

New man Dawid Malan gets off the mark with a tuck into leg for one.

England have surrendered the initiative and now Malan and Root have to rebuild.

Three players have all got starts, and three players are back in the shed. That wicket of Vince raised Australia's energy levels. Cook just played across one.

Cook lbw Hazlewood 39 (Eng 95-3)

It did pitch in line and that was always knocking middle stump over so Alastair Cook has to go.

The opener played across a straight one from Hazlewood and that's a shrewd review from Smith, who gambled correctly that the ball didn't pitch outside leg and wouldn't be umpire's call.

Fine margins - it was very tight to being umpire's call but falls the millimeters over the right side of the line for Australia.

The only think that will save Alastair Cook is if that didn't pitch in line.

Hazlewood gets one through onto Cook's pads. Big appeal from the Aussies but umpire Joel Wilson is unmoved.

Did that pitch outside leg? Steve Smith reckons it is close and sends it upstairs...

I don't think Vince reads a situation well, or the tactics the opposition are throwing at him. I think 95% of Vince's runs come from pure shots so, visually, he looks as good as any England player we've seen. But at this level, it's not about looking great, it's about scoring big runs, and he hasn't done that yet.

It was short and wide. Vince has every right to square cut it. Problem was he didn't play it like Robin Smith!

    Cook 38, Root 5

Root brings up his first boundary, cutting a wide one from Cummins away to the fence.

That shot was similar to the one Vince nicked - sometimes it's all down to execution. Root did look more in control of the stroke though and, crucially, middled it.

It is hard to believe that that pattern of dismissal keeps happening from James Vince.

  19. Eng 88-2published at 29 overs

England captain Joe Root strides out to the crease and defends his first delivery from Cummins.

Of all the frustrating Vince dismissals this series, that may be the most exasperating. The ball was there to be hit but the execution was poor. No footwork and just chucking his hands rashly at it.

He looked in control for each one of the balls he faced before that.

That's a wild waft and a walk off for James Vince knowing that, in the second innings, he will need a big number. There's only so many times you can be frustrated.
