Six very good deliveries from Anderson. But Khawaja is seeing it all beautifully and defends serenely. A maiden.
James Anderson is back into the attack.
Comfortably England's best bowler in this series, he's rarely had a bad spell. Can he conjure something up here?

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special
Brett Lee thinks Tom Curran has it in him to bowl quicker. He thinks he needs a higher jump on his release and if he could do it, he could bowl about 4mph quicker. If Curran can punch up quicker with the left arm, he can bowl quicker.

Stu Harman: What were the selectors thinking when they picked this squad? England don't look like getting a wicket.
Khawaja 162, S Marsh 41
It's starting to feel like England may have taken their last wicket in this Ashes series.

Full from Moeen and Shaun Marsh clatters him away through the covers for four.
And that's the lead for the hosts.

I can't decide if this is a bigger challenge for the England team or those watching. Hot enough to melt statues, wickets an endangered species, Shaun Marsh crawling along. The action is not fitting the spectacle and the series is dying a death.
Khawaja 162, S Marsh 37
Shot! Khawaja angles it away through the vacant third man and the ball wins the race against the chasing Crane.
Australia are just two runs off drawing level.
Stuart Broad gets a hint of reverse swing and again hits Shaun Marsh on the pad.
Broad likes it, putting in a hearty appeal, but the umpire is unmoved.
And for good reason - Marsh got an inside edge on that and scampers away for one.

You know the pitch is flat when people are thinking that Root has under-bowled himself.

Khawaja cuts away but can only pick up one as James Anderson dives well to make the stop. No mean feat given this long, sapping day in the field.
Marsh clips the last ball from Moeen for another single.
Here's how Usman Khawaja gets in shape for a Test match, with the help of a puppy called LeBron...

Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
As a team, I don't think England are that far way. I think they could do with a faster bowler and a more penetrative spinner. I think that would even things up. If Joe Root had scored the runs Steve Smith has scored, it would have made a hell of a difference.
Khawaja 157, S Marsh 35
Marsh flicks off his pads for two and then drives inside the catcher at close mid-on for another couple.
Shaun Marsh shoulders arms to Stuart Broad's first ball that comes back in at him and raps the pads.
Strangled appeal for lbw but that was clearly going over.

svenc: What are the odds on Broad getting his 400th Test wicket in New Zealand?
Right. Here comes Stuart Broad back into the fray. He's still on 399 Test wickets...

Decent enough return from Moeen, the last one just a tad too far down leg and Marsh sweeps away for the third single of the over.
Can England take advantage of Australia bringing up triple Nelson? You know you're getting desperate when you're hoping for triple Nelson to do something, sort of like looking forward to getting another new ball at 160 overs.
