Some of the shots by Woakes have been that of a top-six batsman, not a number eight.

Woakes came in with Mitchell Starc having just taken two wickets in an over and bowling at 147k's. But the Warwickshire man struck 39 from 27 balls with five fours and a six. The ever assured Joe Root made 46 from 58 balls. A superb chase from England.

    5 to win

Mitchell Marsh into the attack. He's only got nine runs to play with, which is a bit like asking a sub to come on score two goals in the last two minutes, something we quite often see at Nyewood Lane. Marsh has a best of 5-33 but he does not trouble the batsmen in this one, Woakes lofting him over the top of cover for three more.

England have timed this chase very well.

Stoinis attempts to atone for his fielding blemish but the impressive Woakes pulls his third boundary. The official crowd is 29,685, which is of course more than we can squeeze in on any English Test ground at present.

I was very impressed with Richardson. He didn't show many nerves. He settled in very quickly on his debut. He bowled very quickly.

Stoinis slides but inadvertently pushes the ball over the ropes and to compound his misery a gaggle of England supporters are right beside him. Richardson finishes with 2-57, 36 dot balls in there, and Australia now have to turn to their support bowlers.

Adam Gale: I'm sorry but Ali is so out of form it's time to give him some time off its painful to watch.

    24 needed off 9 overs

With seven fielders evenly spaced inside the perimeter of the circle, runs are not straightforward but Tye's final delivery is over-pitched and the unflappable Woakes steers it confidently for three.

That's a phenomenal shot, probably the shot of the day. Just when England needed it, Woakes took the momentum away from Australia.

It's definitely doing something now, some sharp inswing for Richardson but the assured Woakes drives him fluently wide of mid-off for a timely first boundary. Not content with that, he stands tall to the next one and pulls it for six. Super stuff.

The bustling Tye getting a bit of reverse swing under the lights in the Brisbane night air but Root calmly drives the final ball through the covers for two. Can the Test captain guide his team to victory? He's got 40 now.

Chris Woakes keeps out the final two, Starc up to 147k's, getting off the mark with a confident push through the covers for a single. Final figures of 4-59 from Starc's 10 and England need 43 from 12 overs.

That is the perfect inswinging yorker from Mitchell Starc. Not many in-form batsmen are keeping that out, and not Moeen Ali. That is not the delivery you want to face when you're in, never mind when you've faced one delivery.
