Poor from Jonny Bairstow, no real need to take a risk like that and try and hit it over the in-field, especially after just losing Alex Hales. It was a time to consolidate and help Joe Root settle at the crease.

    Bairstow c Warner b Richardson 60 (Eng 129-3)

A silly shot from Jonny Bairstow as he tries to cart Jhye Richardson over the top but can only pick out David Warner at cover.

With England well ahead of the rate and a new batsman in I don't think Bairstow needed to do that. Richardson runs away in delight. He has a second wicket on debut and Australia are edging back into this.

  3. Eng 128-2published at 21.1 overs

Root has his first boundary and it's an absolutely gorgeous one, that trademark back-foot punch through point he plays so well.

  4. Eng 124-2published at 21 overs

    Target 271

Stoinis sends down a very short ball that easily clears Bairstow's head without the England opener ducking and is duly called a wide.

Bairstow then pulls and scampers another two before a leg bye brings Root on strike.

The Test captain gets off the mark with a solid drive out to deep cover for one.

Jhye Richardson has certainly shifted the momentum. It was exactly what Australia needed, to build a bit of pressure and take that wicket, but England are still on top.

    Need 152 more to win

Root starts watchfully, playing out four dot balls from the impressive Richardson. A wicket maiden on debut.

Joe Root is the new man in. He made a superb unbeaten 91 in the first ODI at Melbourne, proving immaculate support to Jason Roy.

Can he do the same with Jonny Bairstow here?

Excellent move from Steve Smith bringing on the speedster debutant. Hales tried to guide it down to third man and all he could do was drag it on to the stumps. Richardson has been the pick of the bowlers so far.

  10. wicket

    Hales b Richardson 57 (Eng 119-2)

Jhye Richardson has his first ODI wicket and it's a vital one for Australia.

The debutant beats Alex Hales for pace, with England's number three late and a bit lazy on it, chopping down and onto his own stumps.

You feel Australia are going to have to get a couple of wickets very quickly and you imagine they would be from Starc or Richardson, simply because there isn't the power in the spin bowling department.

A decent first ball from Stoinis as Hales plays and misses. Just three singles off the over.

Refreshments on board and Marcus Stoinis is coming on to bowl.

He's the sixth bowler to be used by Smith in just the 19th over.

I loved batting with Jonny because he makes twos into threes and is willing to run your runs rather than just his own. Alex Hales has been my runner and ran me out!

  16. Eng 116-1published at 18 overs

    Bairstow 57, Hales 55

Bairstow pulls Starc round the corner and somehow plunders two. The ball went almost straight to the fielder but Bairstow backed himself running back to the danger end.

Starc then fools Bairstow with a slower ball but the opener gets enough on it to chip away for two. He then guides away fine and looks for two but Hales has had quite enough of all this running and says no.

Hales rocks the last ball to square leg for a single to keep the strike. And that's drinks.

I think this pitch has deceived a lot of people, including myself, I wasn't expecting it to grip and hold. Had Australia known, they certainly would have picked Zampa.

The problems with Australia's selection are becoming apparent. You just have to question it.

  19. Eng 109-1published at 17 overs

    Target 271

Bairstow goes to sweep the last ball of Finch's over, misses and Australia go up as the ball strikes the pads.

Nothing doing from the umpire so Smith hosts a brief conference over whether to review and decides against. That looked to be sliding down leg.

Finch sends down a wide to bring up the century stand for this pair, before Hales absolutely clatters him back over his head and into the stands.

The first six of the innings and Hales joins Bairstow in reaching fifty.
