  1. Eng 56-1published at 9 overs

Bairstow scurries two before helping a ball drifting down leg on its way to the fence.

Some ropey stuff being sent down by the part-time offie. A penny for Adam Zampa's thoughts.

  2. Eng 49-1published at 8.1 overs

Head continues and Bairstow skips down the pitch at him but misses and it hits him on the pads. Huge appeal from Australia but very little going for that.

    James Anderson
England fast bowler on BBC Test Match Special

After the early loss of Roy these two have settled in pretty well, they've got the pace of the pitch, not done anything too silly and are building a nice partnership.

  4. Eng 49-1published at 8 overs

Seamer Andrew Tye enters the fray and starts with five tight deliveries.

He then sends down a floaty half-volley and Hales cracks a drive wide of mid-off for four.

Where's Nathan Lyon? is the question that will reverberate around the ground. It's ridiculous. Australia still trying to work out what their best team is.

  7. Eng 45-1published at 7 overs

    Bairstow 14, Hales 29

Head loops up another ropey delivery and Hales sweeps his away to the fence.

  8. Eng 40-1published at 6.1 overs

And Head's first delivery is short and wide and dismissively cut away by Hales for four.

After just six overs Australia are having to turn to the part-time off-spin of Travis Head.

That decision to drop leg-spinner Adam Zampa not aging well at all.

The Australian public aren't exactly confident in their team.

There's always a bit of all-duck-or-no-dinner about Jason Roy and there was no dinner today.

  12. Eng 36-1published at 6 overs

    Target 271

Hales sees Bairstow's cover drive in the previous over and tries to raise it, flicking his wrists to clatter Richardson away for four.

A steer to third man brings one before Bairstow clips off his pads for a couple.

Even if you're one of the fastest bowlers in the world, once you start offering width like that, it's bob's your uncle for the batsmen. This is frustrating for captain Smith, width and over-pitched.

  14. Eng 29-1published at 5 overs

    Bairstow 12, Hales 15

Starc flings it down short and wide and Hales cuts it ruthlessly away to the fence. Better directed short balls follow, with Hales pulling one away for a single to deep square leg.

Width again from Starc and Bairstow clatters it past the off-side in-field for four, using the pace nicely.

Hello. Back-to-back boundaries for Bairstow and this one is a belter of a cover drive.

Starc replies with a fierce bouncer, Bairstow tries to lean back and weave away but it smashes into his chest. The Yorkshireman just shrugs it off.

Richardson hasn't got many wickets in the Big Bash but he's got his tail up, he's got some energy in his run-up and he has been probing the batsmen.

  16. Eng 16-1published at 4 overs

    Target 271

Richardson continues his promising start to his first ODI with another tight over, just one coming from it.

Raffael Hirt: How nice of Jason Roy to give others a chance to score some runs too.

Alexander Dodds: Hales' turn to get the record back then.

  18. Eng 15-1published at 3 overs

Hales gets off the mark with a boundary, pulling away a short ball from Starc that sat up. A full toss is then scythed away through point for another four.

A 93mph yorker is then dug out and Hales scampers a quick single. Warner moves round and shies but misses. That would've been tight had he hit but Hales looked like he would've been home safe anyway.

Of all debuts that must be the most fun, a fast bowler would be it. A batsman would be worried about nicking off early, a spinner you might lose it and get hit, but a fast bowler can just run it and let it go.

  20. Eng 6-1published at 2 overs

Debutant Jhye Richardson will open up alongside Starc, bowling to Jonny Bairstow.

Shot! Richardson strays full and Bairstow drives it superbly through the covers for four.

Oof. Bairstow edges the next one just past his off stump, beaten for pace by Richardson. That delivery was 89.5mph. Tasty. Yet another quick to add to Australia's trove.
