They are fired up here. A 90mph yorker on your toes is pretty tasty.

    Target 271

Starc greets Alex Hales with a yorker that England's number three does well to dig out.

The hosts may not have a frontline spinner but Starc looks to be relishing the key role he needs to play.

That is a very good catch, only a couple of inches off the ground. They know he likes to play through that region.

    Roy c Finch b Starc 2 (Eng 2-1)

Australia set the trap and Roy falls into it.

Starc begins with plenty of pace and nip, tailing this one back into Roy's pads as the England opener tries to flick it away but picks out Finch at short mid-wicket.

Smart positioning of the field and Australia have the start they needed.

Cheers, Jamie. Finch aside, Australia's batsmen didn't seem to have much of a plan in their innings. What do the bowlers have in store?

Mitchell Starc will open up to Jason Roy...

Australia 54 runs short of their highest score at the Gabba then, the 324 that came against West Indies in 2010. England's highest at the ground is the 300-8 they made four years ago, although Australia won that match by one wicket with three balls remaining.

No specialist spinner for the Australians remember, but to see if we get a finish like that one in 2014, when Eoin Morgan made a century, here's Jack Skelton again.

Francis Edwards: The England bowling attack is primed to reduce teams to 300 or under, they don’t get greedy because they know their batting can chase anything. Only weaknesses are when not chasing and failing to adapt if they don’t bat on an absolute road.

England coach Trevor Bayliss adds that Jason Roy, who made that England record 180 in Melbourne, could come into the Test reckoning, although not necessarily as an opener.

"I'm sure his name will come up," Bayliss says. "It seems very easy to say throw him in at the top of the Test line-up but most of the time it doesn't usually happen like that."

Sam Fathers: Totally different England to during the Ashes. Morgan may not be a Test player but surely an argument for having him around the team. Him and Root a captaincy team in all forms of the game.

England coach Trevor Bayliss with thoughts on the impending return of Ben Stokes, who has been has been charged with affray but is now available for selection.

"I'm happy that he has been made available, players and coaches are looking forward to seeing him. It's about getting him ready to play and the major goal for us is the New Zealand ODIs," said Bayliss.

"He's raring to go, he just wants to be out of the field playing. He fully understands the reasons why he hasn't been playing and so does our management. It might take him a little time, we'll just have to wait and see."

Let's have a look at some impressive bowling figures from the England attack, after Australia chose to bat in bright Brisbane sunshine, with temperatures well over 30. A total of 24 overs of spin, with the slow bowlers taking five of the wickets.

    • Wood 9-0-55-0
    • Woakes 9-0-37-1
    • Plunkett 8-0-43-1
    • Moeen 7-0-31-1
    • Rashid 10-0-71-2

The way Australia played in the first powerplay, it looked like 350 minimum, but England's bowling has been impeccable.

A lot of the damage was done by the spinners, including Joe Root, who should bowl more, but every member of England's attack adapted to the surface really well.

So from 64-0 after 11 overs with Warner and Finch at the crease, only 270 for the Australians, with only 57 scored in the final 10 overs. Just the three sixes in the innings, plus 21 fours.

Jason Roy struck 16 fours and five sixes himself the other day, so we'll see how he does today in around 25 minutes.

After offering so much, Australia really struggled in the last 15 to 20 overs and just dribbled to the close.

Tye run out (Woakes) 8 (Aus 270-9)

A low full toss from Woakes and Andrew Tye launches it down the ground for six, but it's no red-inker for the tailender as he is run out by a superb throw into the stumps at the bowler's end by Woakes.

So England will need 271 to take a 2-0 lead in the series, at a relatively modest 5.42 an over.
