Pat Cummins is bowling a lot of cross seam deliveries, like he did in the Tests. That makes it harder for the batsmen on slow pitches as it can just come off at different paces and stick in the pitch a bit.

  2. Eng 155-4published at 32 overs

Pace from both ends as Cummins returns, having taken 1-14 from his first four overs. The bright-yellow clad fielders are evenly spread and only two singles result in this one.

England need one of these two to still be there in the last 10 overs, if not both. We know they can both go ballistic at the end of an innings.

    Morgan 33, Buttler 26 (Eng 153-4)

The 150 up for England. The last two fifties have both taken 59 balls, after the first took 63. The menacing Starc back in the attack, with his raggedy facial hair. No wicket for the fearsome fast bowler yet and that last delivery was 138k's, well down on his usual rapid pace. Time for a drink and the huge sponsored bottle on the back of a truck is driven out to the centre.

Morgan has hit that absolute miles. He looks like he's decided England have to get 300 minimum.

  6. 6 runs

    Eng 149-4published at 30 overs

    Run-rate 4.97

What a shot this is from Morgan, marching down the wicket to Stoinis and carving it away over mid-wicket for six more, several rows back and measured at 89 metres, not even off the middle of the bat. An inquest in the crowd as the catch goes down. If England go at eight an over from here they will get to 309, but that will take some doing.

It doesn't look like a 320 pitch. The way the first four wickets fell suggests this pitch is slower than we first though. All four wickets have been batsman error though.

  8. Eng 140-4published at 29 overs

Zampa, neat haircut and a white towel protruding from the waistband of his bright yellow trousers, keeps the boundaries at bay again, but the England pair keep the scoreboard ticking along.

England need to find a way to wrestle back that momentum. Two very powerful destructive batsmen at the crease.

  10. 6 runs

    Eng 133-4published at 28 overs

    Morgan 20, Buttler 19

A reminder that the average score batting first at the SCG is 301 and you imagine England would happily accept that at the moment. Buttler picks up the tempo, however, launching Stoinis over long-on and it lands on the foam boundary rope for the first maximum of the day.

You'd expect most international cricketers to take that catch, not least Steve Smith, who is an excellent fielder.

Steve Smith is furious with himself. It went at some pace but he got both hands to it.

  13. dropped catch

Morgan dropped on 18published at 27 overs

    Eng 125-4

Zampa, who was introduced after 12 overs and took 1-29 from his first five overs, picking up the important wicket of the in-form Jonny Bairstow with that fine googly, trots in again and should have added the wicket of the England captain, but Smith cannot cling on to a well-struck pull diving to his left close in at mid-wicket.

All you want at this stage when you are trying to find the pace of the pitch is a bit of width, but Australia have given them nothing. The Australians are definitely in control.

  15. Eng 118-4published at 26 overs

Thanks Jack. Morgan has collected an impressive record during this innings, he is now the highest scoring batsman in Australia-England ODI matches, passing Ricky Ponting's record of 1,598, but he has more pressing matters on his mind here. Only a single apiece for the two big-hitting batsmen in this Stoinis over.

  16. Eng 116-4published at 25 overs

Buttler hits his first boundary of the day, hammering a drive through wide mid-off. Great control. Not so much next up, a loose pull shot falling short of fine leg.

Morgan then picks up two runs to move ahead of Paul Collingwood to become the second-highest ODI runscorer for England. The highest? Ian Bell.

And with that, I'll hand you over to Jamie Lillywhite to guide you through the rest of England's innings...

Starc continues to pin England down with quick, accurate bowling. Just one to Buttler off the over.

Both of these fast bowlers have come back well. Both Starc and Hazlewood got hit early in the England innings but both have come back really strong.

  20. Eng 108-4published at 23 overs

Jos Buttler is the new man in and gets off the mark with a single from the last ball of an excellent over from Hazlewood.

England under immense pressure for the first time in this series. How will Morgan and Buttler respond? They haven't been in together this early in the first two matches.
