That's a priceless wicket, Joe Root has been formidable so far in this series but now Australia have found a way of getting him out. He was trying to create a little bit of room but all he could do was get an inside edge. It shows the slow nature of the surface, we saw a lot of that in the Test matches.

    Root b Hazlewood 27 (Eng 107-4)

Huge moment. Joe Root tries to glance the returning Josh Hazlewood away but only manages to chop on to his own stumps.

That's the first time Root has been out in this series. He looked in immaculate touch again but Hazlewood strikes with a good delivery that was angling back in.

The value of playing your best bowlers, eh?

Mike Forsythe: Just announced Bairstow was definitely going to score a century. I take full responsibility for that one.

I was expecting the groundsmen to leave some live grass on this wicket for the Australian pacemen to exploit but it looks the slowest surface we have seen in the series so far.

Yeesh. Starc responds with a venomous yorker that Morgan does really well to dig out.

Another dot to finish. Just one to Root off an excellent over, easily Starc's best of the day.

  6. dropped catch

Morgan dropped on 13published at 21.2 overs

Morgan drives back towards Starc on the up - the big quick sticks out his right hand to try and grab it but the ball flicks the fingers and flies away.

A very, very tough chance. You don't see those taken too often.

Mark: OK bowling but what a bad shot from a batsman that in this stage of his career should pick those type of balls. He's put England in trouble again, poor shot!

The game is in the balance here. Australia, especially with that last wicket of Bairstow, have kept things in check.

  9. Eng 106-3published at 21 overs

What a belter! Morgan reverse sweeps Zampa powerfully away through point for four. That's the 100 up for England.

Another reverse sweep next up but it's a scratchy one - diverted straight through Paine's legs for three.

Andrew Benton: Come on England, play smart and go for it!! 350+ would be so brilliant!

  11. Eng 97-3published at 20 overs

    Root 24, Morgan 6

Starc has been a bit loose today though, and strays down leg once again, with Morgan flicking it fine to the fence for his first runs.

Oof. Morgan inside edges into his pads and the ball misses leg stump by two centimetres.

Wide to finish and Morgan can drive away for a couple.

A vastly improved bowling performance from Australia so far today.

Another crucial wicket and plenty of strike bowlers to call on. Speaking of which, Mitchell Starc is returning to the attack...

Captain Eoin Morgan is the new man in and gets a googly first up but defends well.

Excellent bowling. Bairstow had been struggling for a little while and I think Zampa knew that. Yes he had got that boundary the ball before but really well bowled. He got a decent amount of flight, above to eyeline, to draw him in and a decent amount of turn.

    Bairstow b Zampa 35 (Eng 90-3)

    Got him with the googly!

Tremendous response from Zampa to being hit the previous delivery as he sends down a well-disguised wrong 'un that Bairstow doesn't pick.

The England opener plays all around it and sees his stumps rearranged.

It looks like that didn't even hit Root's pads actually. The England Test captain then picks up another single.

Shot! Bairstow stays leg side, goes inside out and clatters Zampa away for four.

  18. Eng 85-2published at 18.1 overs

Root tries to sweep Zampa away - it hits the pads and there's a lengthy appeal from the hosts.

Given not out. Will they review? Smith eventually decides against.

Looks like Root may well have hit that first.

  19. Eng 85-2published at 18 overs

Root steals a quick single as Paine can't get in quick enough to field.

Bairstow then clips just wide of a diving mid-wicket and away towards the fence - it won't quite reach though and the opener settles for three.

Another single from Root the master accumulator.

Mitch Marsh is on for Australia. England need to ensure they score at a decent rate off the all-rounders and Zampa, with those three strike bowlers lying in wait.
