  1. Eng 80-2published at 17 overs

Root clips Zampa into leg for a single before Bairstow scythes to deep point for another.

Zampa then drops short and Root swivels it away powerfully to the boundary.

One wicket was given away - Hales tried to go too hard at it, but with Roy it's how he plays. It's a tough one, England haven't had that fiery start but Root and Bairstow can build for the likes of Buttler and Morgan.

  3. Eng 73-2published at 16 overs

Stoinis continues after drinks, finding a bit of nip off the seam and Bairstow can't work him away until the all-rounder strays too straight and Bairstow can flick off the pads for one.

Root then drives on the up through the covers for a single.

Terrific running from Bairstow, glancing fine to third man and taking on the arm of Cummins, easily making his ground for the second run.

This pitch is flat, flat and flat isn't it? I'm not sure we will see a huge score though, I think 280-300.

  5. drinks break

    Eng 69-2published at 15 overs

Root plays a deft reverse sweep for one before Bairstow looks to climb into Zampa, but can't quite connect, picking up a single via an inside edge off the last.

    And that'll be drinks.

  6. Eng 66-2published at 14 overs

    Bairstow 26, Root 12

Stoinis continues and is driven away sublimely through the covers by Bairstow - but there's a man out in the deep now and that'll get the opener just one.

Root picks up a one and a two for himself.

The average score here at Sydney is 301 so I imagine England are looking somewhere in that ballpark. With losing those two wickets these two guys will have to tick it over and I'm sure as this partnership builds that tempo might increase.

  8. Eng 62-2published at 13 overs

Three singles from the first three balls before Jonny Bairstow defends back down the pitch.

For some reason Tim Paine appeals - Bairstow middled it! Probably one of the most nonsensical appeals you'll ever see in international cricket.

A couple more singles to finish, this pair happy to just tick the scoreboard along for now.

After being dropped for a pitch that turned out to, well, turn at Brisbane, leg-spinner Adam Zampa is back for Australia today and is into the attack...

  10. Eng 57-2published at 12 overs

Stoinis strays wide but Smith does well to half-stop Bairstow's cut shot and concede just one.

Root drives nicely through the covers but Warner chases and keeps it to three.

Bairstow then pulls away a short ball and Cummins puts in a terrific dive to prevent the ball reaching the rope. Excellent fielding all round by the Aussies.

Without being disrespectful to Roy or Hales, Bairstow has got the ability to play either sort of innings. He can go crash, bang, wallop but he can also build an innings as we've seen in Test cricket. He's got that ability to read the game situation.

  12. Eng 51-2published at 11 overs

    Bairstow 20, Root 3

The Yorkshire pairing of Root and Bairstow work away three singles off Cummins, who also concedes another leg-side wide.

Australia will probably be the more pleased after the first 10 - they have bowled tightly. Bairstow has played some nice shots but they have not really got away from Australia and that was probably their powerplay.

  14. Eng 47-2published at 10 overs

Joe Root is the new man in and he gets off the mark with a flick into leg for two.

Australia on top in the first powerplay. Can Bairstow and Root respond?

I can't quite work out if he is trying to hit that along the ground through mid-on or go over the top but he mistimed it and chipped up a simple catch to mid-on. In Stoinis' first over it was probably a case of Hales trying to be too aggressive.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.4 overs

    Hales c Zampa b Stoinis 1 (Eng 45-2)

A very soft dismissal. Marcus Stoinis is on for his first over and Alex Hales looks to attack by hitting him over the top but mistimes the shot, chipping straight to Adam Zampa at mid-on.

Even in Test cricket you see a little bit of inconsistency with wides given but with the technology around surely it's something we could use. The amount of time it takes for a replay to come up, it's before a bowler gets back to his mark.

  18. Eng 44-1published at 9 overs

Bairstow gets an inside edge away for a single, before Hales gets off the mark with a push down the ground for one.

Another drive down the ground, this time from Bairstow, brings another single. Just three from the over and Cummins offering vital control.

How has Alex Hales been affected by the whole Ben Stokes case?

I imagine it was very hard for him being a public incident but seeing how he's come back and settled into the team it would have made him stronger and really focused. It hurt him missing those games so it's a chance for these guys to cement their places.

  20. Eng 41-1published at 8 overs

Bairstow flicks off his pads and it looks to be racing to the fence, but Cummins does superbly to pull it in and keep it to three.

That brings new man Alex Hales on strike - the number three content to play out four dot balls to start.
