That was the first short ball we have seen today. It was brilliantly directed and Root was not in control of that shot. He will be very disappointed.
Root c Hazlewood b Cummins 0 (Eng 6-4)
Oh dearie me.
The first short ball of the day brings about England's third duck and fourth wicket.
It's a well-directed bumper from Pat Cummins, Joe Root taking it on with a hook shot but he miscues and Josh Hazelwood completes a relatively simple catch at deep fine leg.
The hosts have ripped through England's top order on Australia Day.
Captain Eoin Morgan joins Joe Root in the middle and knocks it into the covers for two - England's highest scoring shot of the day.
This match so far is indicative of the one real weakness or at least area of concern for this England ODI side - failing to adapt in bowler-friendly conditions.
It proved their undoing in the Champions Trophy semi-final against Pakistan last year - will it do so again today?

That was another loose shot from an England batsman. Jonny Bairstow was going for a huge drive and it was not quite there for the shot.
It looked like he was trying to hit it too hard and trying to blast it through extra cover.
Bairstow c Paine b Hazlewood 0 (Eng 4-3)
Both England openers have gone for a duck!
And again, it's another loose drive, this time from Jonny Bairstow, who tries to smack Josh Hazlewood through the covers but can only get a thin nick on it through to Tim Paine.
It's shrewd from Hazlewood, pitching it up with just a hint of movement to draw Bairstow into the drive. The Yorkshireman didn't really learn anything from Roy's dismissal though.
A very, very good toss to win for the Aussies so far.
Joe Root will seek to do the rebuilding job he's done well for England many times before. He's not been in quite this early during the series though.
The Test captain is in behind and defends his first four balls.
Excellent from Cummins - he shaped that like an inswinger to Hales but it actually nipped off the seam to deceive the England number three.

Tentative from Alex Hales. He wasn't really that far forward and there was a hint of nip back off the seam from Pat Cummins.
There was not the commitment to the shot that was needed.
Hales b Cummins 3 (Eng 4-2)
Hales' miserable record against Cummins continues.
The Aussie quick gets it angle back in on an awkward length and Hales prods indecisively at it, the ball flicking off his front pad and back onto the stumps.
That probably would've been out LBW anyway if it hadn't deflected on the stumps.
Tremendous start from Australia - where was this in the first three matches?

Hazlewood continues at Hales, offering a bit of width as the England number three cuts him hard into the turf and over the head of point for one.
Bairstow still can't work it away to get off the mark. Another excellent over from Hazlewood, but less movement through the air already and no nip off the pitch.

That was a very good start from Josh Hazlewood. He bowled full of length and tried to extract as much swing as he could.
As we have talked about, Adelaide is a ground where traditionally you get more swing and potentially a bit more seam movement.
Pat Cummins will open up with Hazlewood. A bit of shape, very full but Hales can jab down and work it into leg for one.
Jonny Bairstow to face his first delivery...it hits him high on the inner thigh, angling back in. A couple more defensive strokes to finish.

It does swing here - we saw that in the Test match here. As a bowler, you just lick your lips when the ball starts hooping.
Alex Hales is the new man in and tries to cut one that swings wide. A bit lucky not to edge that but it's signalled wide and England are off the mark.
Hales then taps into the off side and scampers a quick single to get himself off the mark.

That was a loose drive from Jason Roy. He's not really had a look at what the bowler is doing. He's tried to drive it through extra cover but Josh Hazlewood has caught the outside of the bat with a little bit of swing.
Roy c Smith b Hazlewood 0 (Eng 0-1)
Well. A two-ball duck for Jason Roy, who flashes at a full, swinging delivery and scythes it straight to Aussie captain Steve Smith at point.
Plenty of swing on offer for Josh Hazlewood in muggy conditions at Adelaide.
Good stuff to pitch it up and tempt Roy into the drive, but that wasn't a wise shot.
Roy tries to work Hazlewood into leg, misses and it strikes him on the pad.
Brief appeal - nothing doing. That was going over, touch of bounce evident.
Both anthems have just finished at the Adelaide Oval before the fourth ODI on Australia Day.
England opener Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow are out in the middle, with the Aussies taking their positions in the field.
It will be Josh Hazlewood to Roy first up...
