I just wonder if that would have carried to first slip, who has just been taken out. You've got England eight down - this is a bit conservative from Steve Smith not to keep slip in.

It's all happening again. The crowd and groaning, the Aussie fielders are yelping.

First Andrew Tye bowls a slower ball which is edged just short of the diving Tim Paine. Then new man Tom Curran mis-times a push into the off-side and the ball balloons over the cover field.

    Rashid c Paine b Cummins 7 (Eng 120-8)

Pat Cummins responds and responds well. First he bowls a bouncer to Adil Rashid which, even if called a wide, has the England batsman a little more on the back foot.

Then he bowls a good line outside off stump and Rashid can't help having a nibble. He gets a thin nick through to Paine and is on his way.

Delightful. Pat Cummins meet Adil Rashid. It's the England leg-spinner's first bat of this series and he drives the big Australian quick through extra cover. Geoffrey has just purred in his sleep at that one.

  6. Eng 113-7published at 31 overs

    Woakes 40, Rashid 1

Adil Rashid is the man sent out to join Chris Woakes with Tom Curran and Mark Wood at numbers 10 and 11. For you to have any hope of England winning what do they need to get to? What score at least makes a game of it?

I wonder if Tye held that one back, speed-wise, and it foxed Moeen a little bit.

That sums up Moeen's luck. If he was in form, he would have hit that to the side of the fielder.

    Moeen c Head b Tye 33 (Eng 112-7)

    Ah.

Moeen Ali goes again but this time hits his pull shot right to Travis Head on the square leg boundary. Head takes the catch with his heels right on the rope and throws the ball up, steps off the field and back inside again just to make sure but that was a comfortable catch.

Andrew Tye has his first ODI wicket and all England's hopes are seemingly resting on Christopher Roger Woakes.

Moeen is finding his feet here. It might have been a blessing in disguise for him personally that he was able to spend some time at the crease finding some form.

Now Moeen Ali gets in on the act! That's a poor ball from Marsh but Moeen swats him through mid-wicket to the boundary.

That brings up the 50-partnership in just less a run a ball.

That shows the size of the boundary square of the wicket is not huge. It was off the toe of the bat. It just had enough brute strength to get over the fielder.

    Wow. Just wow.

Mitchell Marsh returns and Chris Woakes greets him with a brilliant pull shot into the stands. There was a fielder back there but he was never in the game. Comfortably over his head.

  16. Eng 100-6published at 29 overs

    Run rate 3.45

Steve Smith has had enough of spinner Adam Zampa after Chrissy Woakes made him look like a your average club spinner in the previous over. Andrew Tye is back.

Some good fielding by Travis Head on the extra cover boundary prevents Woakes collecting another four and England move to 99.

And there's the 100! It has taken 29 overs to get there but from 8-5 it's a decent effort. I feared England would be toppled well before now.

  17. Eng 97-6published at 28 overs

    Moeen 29, Woakes 29

A single to Woakes brings Moeen back onto strike. Woakes has already caught up with the left-hander's score. He's only been out there for 25 minutes!

Now one run each for this pair to end the over, the last comes with the first false shot of Chris Woakes' innings. It was a slower, knuckle ball from Hazlewood. Very deceptive.

We're seeing this pitch is getting much better to bat on. England are going to need much more than 95-6 on this surface.

  19. Eng 94-6published at 27.1 overs

This is silly now. Hazlewood, the man who blew away three of England's top order, is caressed through the covers again by Chris Woakes.

Another four. The England all-rounder has 27 from 26 balls.

That shot from Chris Woakes, when he hit Adam Zampa for four through the off side, was the shot of one of the best batsmen in the world.
