He's done it again! This one should be caught though.

Woakes sweeps leg-spinner Zampa through the air in the leg side. Andrew Tye is fielding a few yards in from the mid-wicket rope but doesn't pick the ball up. It goes a yard or so above his outstretched arms but only lands a yard over the rope.

Six more to the total. Woakes won't care.

Oh my! Chris Woakes does time the ball so magnificently. What a glorious shot that is.

  3. Eng 171-8published at 41 overs

    Woakes 71, Curran 19

I'd be staggered if Marcus Stoinis gets another over. He's gone for 24 from his three overs. No other Aussie bowler has an economy rate of over six.

Chris Woakes has a one-day high score of 95 not out by the way. Just saying...

    Is this really Chris Woakes?

I know he's good but this good? All of England's top order failed and he's just smacked a fourth six into the stands. This one is a short-arm jab, again into the leg side. Brilliant.

  5. Eng 162-8published at 40 overs

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine gets very excited under the helmet as Zampa almost sneaks one under the bat of Tom Curran as the Surrey and England man goes back to cut. Curran just gets some wood on it and chops the ball down into the pitch.

Two singles finish the over. Good news for England is Chris Woakes will start the next over on strike.

40 overs gone. England scored 102 in the last 10 overs of the last game in Sydney. Same again?

  6. Eng 158-8published at 39 overs

Woakes sensibly lets the final two balls of the over go by after that maximum. Australia are going to turn back to the spin of Adam Zampa. He wasn't very threatening earlier.

  7. 6 runs

    Eng 152-8published at 38.3 overs

    Woakes 61, Curran 16

His biggest six of the day! England just need one of these last two to stay with Chris Woakes.

A poor ball from Marcus Stoinis, banged in with little venom, and with a big swing of the bat Woakes clubs the ball into the stand over square leg.

What a knock he is playing.

It's been a lone hand from Chris Woakes, who has looked in great touch.

    Woakes 53, Curran 15

Chris Woakes' scores in this series - 39 not out, 53 not out and now 47 not out.

Make that 50! A hoik over the leg side for four to mid-wicket. A half century off 62 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Michael Clarke has just suggested on Aussie TV that England could get to 220 if they bat the 50 overs. Chris Woakes should be given a cricketing knighthood if that happens.

Josh Hazlewood's delivery to remove Jos Buttler was magical - one of the deliveries of the summer.

  12. Eng 141-8published at 37 overs

    Woakes 46, Curran 14

For any of you just waking up you haven't woken up in the bad old days of English one-day cricket. This is really happening.

In difficult batting conditions with plenty of swing on offer Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood blew away the England top order. At one stage Eoin Morgan's side were 8-5 with four batsmen out for a duck. Eoin Morgan and Moeen Ali put on 50 to help England recover to three figures but both were dismissed. Chris Woakes has made things look surprisingly easy since then and is closing on a half-century but that is perhaps a more worrying sign that this pitch is flattening out.

Back in the present, Marcus Stoinis bowls his first over and finishes it with a grimace and holding his back. That doesn't look too good.

Ian Clark: I hope this is just a hangover from winning the series.

  14. Eng 135-8published at 36 overs

    Woakes 44, Curran 10

Tom Curran made a tidy, battling 39 in the Ashes series and has five first-class half-centuries. He needs to support Woakes here but plays an airy-fairy sort of stroke to Hazlewood.

That's better. So much better. Short from Hazlewood and Curran picks the length early, commits to a pull and slaps the ball for four through mid-wicket.

It's Australia Day today - when the nation commemorates the day in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet of 11 British ships, arrived at Sydney Cove to signal the birth of the colony. However, it should be pointed out that Australia's national day of celebration has drawn much criticism recently from those who say it causes unfair hurt to indigenous people. If you want to swat up on the subject, our colleagues in news have written this.

    Tye 6-0-21-1

Yikes. That's quite a delivery from Andrew Tye. It moves a long way and Tom Curran misses it by a distance. Tim Paine is flummoxed behind the stumps too and concedes a bye.

Woakes chops a single off the final ball to keep the strike. 15 overs left.

I'm really impressed with Woakes and his intent. He doesn't want to be bogged down by the situation. It's easy to block away and add nothing but at least the scoreboard is moving - even if it's only a little.

  18. Eng 125-8published at 34 overs

    Woakes 41, Curran 4

Pat Cummins continues for the final over of his allocated 10 in this match. What a bowler he is.

England are going to keep on attacking, even in this dire situation. Tapping it around for 160 won't be enough. They may as well slog in the hope of reaching 200?

Curran gets a thick edge on an aggressive drive but it falls safely and bounces a couple of times down to third man. Woakes nicks the final ball of the over but it drops short, denying him of a first five-for in one-day cricket. He finishes with a career-best four wickets for 24.

More variation from Andrew Tye. This slower ball completely deceives Chris Woakes who goes for the big drive.

Tye has bowled well today. The best I have seen him bowl in the series. It helps when you come on with the opposition five down for pretty much nothing in the Powerplay, mind.
