Stokes is so awful to watch when he gets in this mode. He is trying to “prove” he can play a sensible innings. Absolute rubbish. GET ON WITH IT.

A rare boundary for England but a chance for New Zealand. Colin Munro's second delivery sits up on the pitch and Eoin Morgan is through the shot. He generates enough power to get it just past the diving mid-off and it streaks away to the boundary for four. A couple of balls later Tom Latham, standing up behind the stumps, is struck on the helmet.

Doctor Joker: How is Malan not getting a game? He was probably the best batsman during the Ashes series.

    Morgan 30, Stokes 16

The two Colins operating well in tandem. Eoin Morgan chips De Grandhomme's third delivery back down the ground and pole-axes Ben Stokes at the non-striker's end. Slow going at the moment for England. Morgan takes a single off the last ball to bring up his 6,000th run in ODIs.

At this moment you'd prefer to be in the New Zealand camp. Their slower bowlers have done a great job, making it hard work for England on what is a poor surface.

Another canny over from Colin Munro who is busy to the crease off a short run-up. Eoin Morgan attempts to cut one away but mistimes it straight and jabs it down into the pitch. Difficult for England's batsmen to get the ball away at the moment. You sense Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes are going to have cut loose at some point, though.

With the lack of consistent space and a couple going through the top, I wouldn't want to be facing Mark Wood on this surface.

Thanks Stephan. It looks like anything around the 250 mark will be a good total for England here. A relatively expensive over as far as Colin de Grandhomme's spell with five singles taken off off it. New Zealand flying through their overs.

He was the only one who went for it, got a single hand to it - and dropped it. Someone without an orange T-shirt has gone for it at the same time and messed him up. I'd be having a stern word - I'd be very miffed at losing out to a "civilian".

Hello! The first maximum of the day, Eoin Morgan deciding he's enough of tiki-taka cricket and lofting Ish Sodhi over mid-wicket for six. There's a chance for one chap in a special T-shirt to take a one-handed catch b but he shells the opportunity to win $50,000. There might not be many opportunities for the 50k today.

At the start of this, his seventh over on the bounce, Colin de Grandhomme has figures of 1-12. He's channeling the spirit of Gavin Larsen and Chris Harris, the great New Zealand trundlers. Only two singles from it. It's like watching club cricket.

This is a very tricky ground on which to set a score, but New Zealand you sense will come out and be very aggressive with their approach. The last time England played here in the World Cup the game was almost over by this point I think! England 123 and New Zealand knocked it off in about 12 overs.

  15. Eng 78-3published at 23 overs

Sodhi continues to go through his tricks. Leggies and googlies. Morgan sweeps and cuts, singles taken as the ball trundles over the lush outfield. The lack of boundaries - we've had just eight - means that New Zealand are whipping through the overs. In this situation, time can creep past a batting side before they know it.

Because there is no square either side of the wicket it is difficult to get it away. The dibbly-dobbly medium pacers therefore become much more difficult to get away on a pitch like this.

The lack of runs does not mean a lack of intrigue. Quite the opposite, in fact. These games, where runs are a premium, are often more interesting than seeing the ball cross the boundary every other delivery. Only a single from De Grandhomme's over. England are almost halfway. If you offered them 230, would they take it?

There must have been a fault line, like a tectonic plate, on the bottom of Ben Stokes' bat!

In that last over De Grandhomme got one to climb, now he gets one to roll along the floor. It hits the toe of Stokes' bat, which loses a huge chunk. What's it made of? Rice Krispies? Knock On Wood is played by the DJ, who fancies himself as a comedian.
