This is where Kane Williamson missed a trick by not bowling Ish Sodhi through when the two left-handers were at the crease. Buttler is the only England batsman to get hold of Sodhi on this tour.

    Stokes 36, Buttler 10

Jos Buttler has the bit between his teeth and could be England's game-changer here. He reserve sweeps Ish Sodhi's first ball for four with those powerful wrists of his, then finds the boundary again from the next ball as he uses his feet and hits over the top. Buttler may end up leading a bit of charmed life on this pitch but five or six overs of fireworks could swing the momentum England's way.

I think England have assessed it reasonably well. 220 could be well in the game here.

    Stokes 35, Buttler 1

All the focus on Ben Stokes here and he flicks a delivery from Tim Southee off his legs through midwicket for four. A rare boundary. Southee responds by changing the angle to round the wicket and Kane Williamson brings the field up to prevent him from stealing the strike to give Ish Sodhi the opportunity to bowl six at Jos Buttler.

  7. Eng 144-4published at 37 overs

    Stokes 29, Buttler 1

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler is the new man at the crease and it will be interesting to see his approach here. New Zealand will try to keep him under the pressure early on but he's given a freebie from Isa Sodhi first up as he drops one in short which Buttler whips off his hips. Sodhi's final delivery is a jaffer which pitches outside leg and spins wickedly and bounces high.

He's played a nice, measured knock and has been England's batsman on this surface. Well bowled, Tim Southee. It's probably one too many times that Morgan has tried to dab the ball down to third man.

Tim Southee back into the attack. "This is boring" somebody from the crowd shouts at the start of the over, but moments later Eoin Morgan is back on his way back to the pavilion. The England skipper attempts to guide Southee's final delivery through third man but his judgment is wrong and it clatters into his off stump. However, that may yet prove to be a useful knock from Morgan.

This is a patient knock from Ben Stokes, or he's not grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck depending on your viewpoint. His 28 runs have taken a whopping 57 balls which again emphasises how difficult it is to bat on this Shredded Wheat-coloured pitch (other cereals are available). Another tight over from Colin Munro with just three from it.

Trent Boult continues with short stuff but this time Ben Stokes reads it. Kind of. He doesn't really time a wider delivery but slices it like a tennis shot through the extra cover area and it reaches the rope. Boult's fifth delivery is edged by Eoin Morgan but the ball does not carry to Tom Latham who does superbly to prevent it going for four.

Arjun SIngh: I laugh at people who are criticising Morgan and Stokes. Both playing the conditions extremely well. Still, it’s a shame we knew this game was lost practically from the moment Morgan lost the toss. New Zealand will have to try hard to lose this.

To Richard from London [30th over], if Stokes came in and went after it going out cheaply he'd be heavily criticised. It's a slow track and he's protecting both wickets. He'll go big when he's ready.

Colin Munro with his cropped hair looks like he could have been in the military. Appropriate for a man bowling military medium. Eoin Morgan cuts his behind square for two before he attempts a more flamboyant shot over the top without really connecting and can only take a single.

Trent Boult is back into the attack and he is running in with fire in his belly. Boult's second delivery pops up and hits Ben Stokes in the particulars. The Durham all-rounder grimaces but is fine. Boult continues with the shorter stuff to Eoin Morgan but the England skipper is able to get over the top of the ball and control a pull.

It's been un-Englandesque, the way they have played. It highlights the surface, the pace of the outfield and how well New Zealand have bowled. Credit to Morgan and Stokes. They are building a partnership in touch conditions.

  19. Eng 120-3published at 31 overs

    Morgan 39, Stokes 20

Colin Munro floats a slower one up outside off stump and Eoin Morgan bites. But the England skipper is able to loft it over the in field and scampers back for two. Munro's bowling very wide of the crease, but drags his penultimate delivery down the leg side and Tom Latham is unable to prevent it scurrying away for five wides. Valuable runs for England.

Colin de Grandhomme finishes his 10-over spell with a miserly 1-24. The most economical figures by a New Zealand bowler since the 2015 World Cup. Eoin Morgan digs out his final delivery. Ben Stokes meanwhile has 19 off 47 balls,
