I think England have batted really well. Their bowlers will be encouraged by what they have seen.

NZ collapse from 80-1 to 103-6

The difference between top batsman and the people who can bat is placement. He just picked out the fielder at mid-off.
Woakes c Williamson b Boult 16
A low full toss from Trent Boult is met by Chris Woakes, but he can only send it back into the hands of Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson at mid-off.
Moeen 18, Woakes 16
Much tighter from Tim Southee and a few ugly swipes from Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali. Eventually Woakes gets hold of one but a superb piece of fielding from Martin Guptill denies him
Moeen 16, Woakes 14
This is a lovely little cameo from Moeen Ali. The extra pace from Trent Boult is to his liking and he pulls the left-arm Kiwi paceman to the boundary. Chris Woakes attempts to do the same off the penultimate delivery but mistimes it. However, Moeen keeps the strike.

The wicket isn't too bad for the most part, but the odd ball goes through the top or stops in the pitch. As a batsman, you have top put that out of your mind. That's why it's so hard to set a total. When you're chasing, you're aware of the situation and are almost happy to write a couple of overs left.

Listening at my hotel in Paddington, London. I'm possibly last member of Barmy Army back from the Ashes. After the Tests I spent more time in Aus including Big Bash. Moved on to Bali, NZ and Chile. Flew in to Heathrow from Santiago on Thursday to find train home to Torquay cancelled! Sleep patterns are all over the place. Keep up the good work. Hoping for a train in the morning.

Pat Hinton: Pacing the living room listening to NZ v England with my two-day-old son, Cillian, born at home at 2.25am. He gave me a bit of catching practice as he arrived two minutes before the ambulance crew turned up and I ended up delivering him on the bathroom floor.
Moeen 10, Woakes 12
Tim Southee returns to finish at the death and his third ball is extravagantly smeared over the cover fielder by a brilliant shot by Moeen Ali and to the boundary for four. Chris Woakes shows more finesse as he guides one down to third man off the face of the bat to also find the rope. That's a good over for England.

Neil Virani: This is a glorious pitch. Saying people want fours & sixes is a little childish, there's no joy in bowlers as cannon fodder. Batsmen working for their runs is much better.
Moeen 6, Woakes 5
Chris Woakes now at the crease and the all-rounder cheekily guides one down to the third man boundary off Colin Munro. England need to continue the momentum set by Jos Buttler.

There's genuine turn there. That will please Moeen, Rashid and maybe ever Joe Root. It bit, turned away from Buttler's bat and it was a good catch from Latham, who hasn't been too tidy today.
Buttler c Latham b Sodhi 29 (Eng 184-6)
Some beautifully clean striking from Jos Buttler who hits England's only England's second six of the innings off Ish Sodhi. However, a couple of deliveries later he is back on his way to pavilion. The England wicketkeeper skips down the track as he attempts to go big again, but the ball clips the outside edge and Tom Latham takes the catch. Latham also took the bails off looking for a stumping, but Buttler has definitely nicked it.
Buttler 23, Moeen 2
Jos Buttler is not messing around here. Back in his creases he biffs Colin Munro to the rope with a baseball-type shot. He and Moeen are going to look to boost this total with just eight overs left now.

Not sure if I'm allowed in the 3am club because I'm here in the ground. Visiting Wellington from London and this is my first time watching live cricket. Learning a lot from your coverage, thanks!
I'm more a triathlete than a cricketer myself but Titch [James Taylor] sounds very like Alistair Brownlee so makes me feel right at home...

It came off the bottom of the bat. Munro was about eight paces in off the rope and backtracked beautifully. You would have thought Stokes would want to bat through and let Buttler be more aggressive.
Stokes c Munro b Sodhi 39 (Eng 168-5)
Ben Stokes can't wait any longer and cuts loose. He opens up his stance and looks to hit Ish Sodhi back over his head and into the stands, but he has not quite got the power to a delivery wide-ish, especially on this pitch, and Colin Munro takes the catch at long-off. Moeen Ali joins Jos Buttler at the crease.
Stokes 38, Buttler 15
Colin Munro is chewing frantically as he tinkers with this field, a little nervous now Jos Buttler is at the crease. Buttler is busy and mixes delicate dabs with punchy singles as England take seven off the over by rotating the strike.

Mark Spooner: We complain that it’s a batsman’s game. Then get a pitch like this. England have done well in the conditions but a low score always favours the chasing team. Just don’t want a boring NZ chase.
Steve: Resilient knock from Morgan on a difficult track. Stokesy and Buttler more than capable of giving us something to bowl at from here. Release the shackles.
