  • Inaugural day-night Test in NZ

  1. NZ 7-0published at 7 overs

James Anderson backs up his new-ball partner with a maiden of his own. Tom Latham leaves anything slightly wide of off stump and shows the maker's name to anything straighter. Lots of 'oohs' and 'ahhs' from the England slip cordon. Crucially nothing in the wickets column yet, however.

This isn't a belting pitch but if you get it on a full length there is not extravagant movement but there is something there.

  3. NZ 7-0published at 6 overs

    Raval 2, Latham 5

Stuart Broad found some good lengths and his third delivery has Jeet Raval back in his crease to a rising delivery. A maiden over from Broad, who examines the pitch and gets himself a drink at the end of the over before putting on his white sun hat.

Can people stop using a 'lack of preparation' as an excuse. There is no excuse to being bowled out for 58. You would think these guys have never played in these types of conditions before.

  6. NZ 7-0published at 5 overs

It's not going to be England's day is it? The left-handed Tom Latham attempts an extravagant drive to a wide delivery from James Anderson and the ball streaks through the slips and down to the boundary for four. Another let-off.

Latham learns his lesson and gets his body behind the ball for the rest of the over. Anderson's penultimate delivery raps Latham on the pad and England manage a half-hearted appeal for lbw. There was a noise and an inside edge.

It was a conventional slip catch - about thigh high. Root may have slightly put off by Malan moving across from third slip.

  8. dropped catch

Raval dropped on 2published at 3.4 overs

    NZ 3-0

Raval edges Broad but Joe Root at second slip drops it, distracted momentarily by Dawid Malan cutting across in front of him perhaps.

Tom Latham and Jeet Raval in pretty watchful fashion. Lots of leaving the ball outside off to James Anderson. Understandable considering the carnage before tea.

Thanks Matt. Give those fingers a well-earned rest! In a strange way that was all very exhilarating to watch, even if you are England fan. Heroics required from James Anderson and Stuart Broad if England are to have any hope here you sense.

Distracted by England's calamitous batting, I forgot to tell you that the teams took the 'tea' interval at the change of innings. Remember the longer break comes second in day-night cricket.

Anyway. I'm off for a lie down and to try and forget that ever happened.

Here's Timothy Abraham to take you through this session.

There had been plenty of talk before the game about whether Stuart Broad would take the new ball for England in this match but Joe Root has indeed stuck with his two main men - Broad and Anderson.

It's a quiet start from Broad too with not a lot of movement. These two left-handers Raval and Latham each add a single.

Don't give me rusty. A rusty gate is still a gate. It may squeak but it's a gate. A rusty batsman should be able to bat. England batsman are rubbish against pace bowling and now they're rubbish against swing bowling. They should be used to that.

A little short from Anderson for the rest of the over and he doesn't look half as threatening as Boult did.

No runs as Latham blocks out the rest of the over. His heart might just be settling down after that crazy first ball.

That was an incredibly bad run - it just wasn't on. All three stumps to aim at as well - or two and a half.

England's bowlers now feel the pressure to come out and bowl as well as New Zealand's. Sometimes you do see Test matches when both teams are rolled for nothing.

    What on earth?

New Zealand have just stood and watch that calamity from England but Jeet Raval almost runs Tom Latham out on the very first ball as he calls his partner through for a kamikaze single.

Latham would have been short of his ground by two or three metres but the throw from close-in in the covers misses.

    A missed opportunity for England.

And with that it's time for some cricket again.

Jimmy Anderson is at the top of his mark. I'd love to know what he is thinking right now.

It might seem a little odd to say it but you just don't know what is a good total until both teams have batted on it!

It's easy to have extreme knee-jerk reactions to these sort of situations but England's Test form has been erratic at best for too long. Symptomatic of the 'here for a good time not for a long time' approach. Bayliss can coach the white ball stuff OK but this isn't good enough Trev. It's not OK.
